Day 15:

Okay, so what happened between Day 9 and Day 15? I wasn't around my computer to be able to track it, that's what! On Wednesday, I was in the hospital with my wife for an upper endoscopy. She has had trouble swallowing for 18 months now, and the doctor doesn't quite know what to do, and has stretched her esophagus three times. He says next time that he is considering Botox injections inside the throat.

Thursday through Sunday we were camping as a family, joined on Friday by the rest of my wife's family (immediate and extended) for a family reunion. It was quite fun, and I tried to make smart food choices, but I can honestly say I wasn't a good boy. I still ended up losing, but not as much as I had hoped. I knew it would happen, so I'm not stressing about it by any means. I even got in some good exercise on two of the days, so that's not bad. I over-indulged on carbs, with a lot of candy, cookies, etc. and my blood sugar is showing it (and I'm feeling it). Gotta get it back!

Since this is my only journal, I want to mention the exciting and wild times we had while camping. We went up on Thursday, a day before everyone else was scheduled to be there. We had a lot of gear and people, so we ended up taking both the van and the pickup. My son wanted to ride motorcycles up, so he and rode our bikes. Kind of a waste, but it was fun. We didn't get out of town quite as fast as we had hoped but we got up to the resort/campground in the late afternoon. After unloading and setting up the tents etc., we made dinner, ate, laughed and had fun. My son started a fire, and everybody (but me) ate 'smores and enjoyed the fire. It started to rain, but it was just a sweet, summer rain. No problem.

The next day every body else showed up. My wife's brother and sister brought up their ATV's and so I and my two sons went on a long ride with the girls behind us. Couldn't talk my wife into going with us. It was GREAT! I want to get one of those. I didn't pressure Teresa, because it took a long time to get her on the back of my motorcycle (although now she loves it and asks to go for rides). We spent most of the day swimming at the hot springs/slides that were at the campground and catching up with relatives. It rained in the evening, a little more, but still not unpleasant.

On Saturday, more people showed up. My second son (19 years old) drove my motorcycle to town (about 2 miles) to get some forgotten supplies with his younger cousin on back. Something happened and he tipped over in the parking lot of the convenience store. Not much happened to the bike (scratches), but his arm and leg were skinned up good. He felt horrible because he knows how much I love my bike. I love my son more, and it wasn't a big deal to me. Like I said to him, "I can buy another bike... I can't make another you!" His bike is 20+ years old, but he lusts after mine. (Can't say that I blame him.)

My oldest son had to get back home, so we packed up all the non-essentials and sent it home with him.

So, as we were preparing to go down for the night, a huge lightening storm started lighting up the horizon. We went and climbed in bed, but in a tent, every flash lights up the entire tent. Then the rain started, and there was no way I could sleep. After a while of that, the wind started howling. What surprised me is that my little girls slept through all of that! When it calmed down, I got up, went and found some pegs, and staked down the dome tent that my wife and I were in. The walls had moved way too much for me. Right after I got back in my tent, one of my little ones (10 yr old) started screaming and crying in their tent about having a spider bite her. I don't know if it was real or a dream, but I couldn't settle her down, so I took her into my tent and let her lay down with us. Right then, the rain started again and the wind started howling. The tent wall was laying in my face! And my little girl was scared spitless! So I told my wife that I was going to take her and sit in the van and wait it out. My wife said, "Do you think the tent is safe for me to stay in?" I thought again, and told her to come out too. We went to the other tent (not a dome tent... good old fashioned 6-man pole tent) and the whole family huddled together. I climbed out a little later to check on other family members, and was astounded by the devastation. There were tree limbs (2-4 inches) scattered all over the camp. The dome tent that we had left was flattened. Several of the other tents were down as well. All of the canopies were blown down, and most of them bent and shredded. Chairs were scattered everywhere. Very few of the tents were unaffected. My brother-in-law and I were cleaning up and it calmed down suddenly. It was scary looking. Luckily noone was hurt, and other than the canopies and one tent, there wasn't any permanent damage. I set our tent back up, put everybody back to bed, and finally fell asleep for the first time at 4:30 am. What a night!
