Day 36:

I had a bad weekend! But it was fun! I feel bad about the weight gain, but it was enjoyable to get there. I didn't do any journaling last week because I was in class and too busy to be able to write anything. It was great, and I learned a bunch of stuff that should enhance my career long-term. I haven't made any kind of motion laterally for quite some time.

I gained 3 lbs this week. Joshua's birthday dinner was Thursday, and I overindulged. Friday night, I kept the overindulgence. Then Saturday, my sweet wife and I went for a medium sized (120 miles) ride on the Suzuki with my brother, my sister, my #2 son, and my sister's daughter (along with some other spouses). It was fun, and we stopped at a German Deli in Salt Lake City for some Knockwurst's and great food.

As we were heading home, my #1 son texted me asking me if we were still planning on a hike. My wife and I had promised him that we would hike up one of the canyons by our house and see the waterfall at the top. He is an outdoorsy type, and is always hiking and climbing. He is quite an accomplished rock-climber. He knows all of the mountains and canyons in the area, but "Dad, I still can't find the waterfall!" I had been there with him before (although it had been a couple of years), and it is a nice hike, with an incline, but little climbing. My wife had started feeling ill about half-way through the ride (she got very sick and it lasted until today), and my daughters (who wanted to go earlier) both were involved with friends, so he and I took off. I let him lead (like I could! He's 22 and I'm 49.) and wasn't paying attention to the trail. I was just enjoying the hike and talking to him. He and I haven't talked much lately, so it was kind of fun. No pressure. As we got further and further, the trail didn't look familiar to me at all! And there was a lot of rock fields to climb through. Big rocks! After we had gone a couple of miles (I swear it was straight up!) it was getting late enough that I told him that I was sure we were in the wrong place. We reached a point that he could go (being a climber) but I was fairly stuck (being a fat old dad) so we turned around. It was getting late anyway. going down was a lot easier, but climbing down rocks is no picnic either. When we got further down, I realized where we had missed the turn off. I pointed it out to Joshua. He said, "Six times this summer I have come up to see the waterfall, and six times I have looked at that signpost and thought it was pointing the other way!" (He did go up on Monday... and finally saw the waterfall! It is a 30-50 foot waterfall that in the early summer (run-off) is quite impressive, but this late in the season is just a trickle.

Just a note, I took the kids bowling (wife still not feeling good) yesterday on Labor Day, and it was hard. My legs were killing me from the hike on Saturday! This morning's run was a quick walk, and I probably looked like the Tinman because my legs wouldn't function right. The front of my thigh would lock up and I'd get all jerky. Doh!

I am not going to get discouraged by my reversal this week. I have been slowly but surely getting more healthy, and I am NOT GOING TO QUIT!

Day 22:

So, things could have gone better this last weekend. I need to stay consistent over the weekends. I probably would have lost a lot more if the weekend hadn't interrupted!

One good thing, yesterday my wife put her arms around me, hugged me, and said "You're losing your love handles!" That made me feel good.

This morning's run was one of those things I didn't want to do, but I did it anyway! So I actually ran 10 minutes straight without running. That felt good. I don't think I've ever done that before. Woohoo! I just wish I wouldn't hurt so much. I need some new shoes, and some new legs. I guess I'll never be 25 again. Wish I knew then what I know know!

And then I went for a walk during my lunch hour!

I couldn't find my motorcycle key this morning (ended up being in my son's car) so I had to take the bus. The place where I work is so crowded parking that if you are five minutes late, you won't have a parking space (except for motorcycles... that's why I ride it to work). When it came time to go home, I decide to walk. It's only 2-1/2 miles, and I didn't have much to do, and our house guests (single woman with 3 kids younger than 5, homeless, basically, until she goes back to school in another town, but all this is another story) are driving me bonkers, and I wasn't in any hurry to get home. Good exercise! I'm obsessed with exercise, but not overly :)
