I realized something very important for me recently.
Like most people, I've always had a notion that diets are about deprivation. "Oh, no, I can't eat that. I have to eat this godawful pile of dry lettuce. But please, eat whatever you want. Don't let my suffering stop you from having a nice lunch." I have no patience for diets because they're always about suffering, and who wants to do that?
There are only a couple of things on my forbidden list-- high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners.
Right now I'm eating well. Very well, in fact-- maybe even better than I was before started doing this. My food is flavorful, satisfying, and plentiful, and I never feel like I'm starving myself or going without. I'm eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, yogurt, and meats that are part of bigger dishes rather than entrees unto themselves. Even my sweet tooth is happy-- I have desserts regularly, even if they tend to be fruit-centric rather than rich, gooey chocolate things.
Recording everything I eat is good discipline, plus it makes me think about things before I consume them.
I feel like I could eat this way indefinitely and not feel like I'm missing out on much. I'm not going without, I'm just choosing differently.

This is still surprisingly easy.
Yesterday we had donuts in the office, and they didn't even look like something I wanted to eat. For over two weeks now I've only eaten things that I cooked at home, fresh fruits and vegetables, and the occasionally carefully-chosen restaurant meal.
Right now I'm eating my usual breakfast of blueberries with some yogurt and agave nectar. I ran out of berries from the farmers market and now I'm eating supermarket berries. They're from Whole Foods, but they're still way less flavorful than the ones that come straight from the farm. I'm getting spoiled!
