How to Use the Smart Food Scan

The Premium Smart Food Scan uses advanced image recognition to identify the foods on your plate and instantly estimate their calories and nutrition information, ready to log to your Diary. Instead of manually searching for each food item, you can simply scan your meal and let the Smart Food Scan identify what’s on your plate.

Whether you are logging a home-cooked meal, takeaway food, or a packaged product, Smart Food Scan can help speed up the logging process. After scanning your meal, the feature identifies the foods present, estimates their portion sizes and matches them to verified food entries in the fatsecret database.

You can then review the results, make adjustments if needed and log the entire meal to your Diary in just a few taps.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Smart Food Scan

Step 1: Open the Smart Food Scan

On the Diary page, tap the meal you would like to log. This will open the food add page. Tap the camera icon to launch the Smart Food Scan feature. You can also launch the Smart Food Scan from the Premium tab in the app by tapping “Log meals from photos with Smart Food Scan”.

Once opened, your camera will activate so you can capture an image of your food.

Step 2: Capture or Upload Your Food Photo

Take a clear, well-lit photo of your meal. For best results, ensure all food items are fully visible and within the frame.

Once your photo is captured or uploaded, Smart Food Scan will analyze it to identify the foods and estimate their portion sizes. It then matches them to items in the fatsecret database to provide accurate calorie and nutrition information.

Prefer to use a photo you have already taken? Tap the photo icon in the bottom left corner to upload an image from your device.

Step 3: Review and Confirm the Results

Once the Smart Food Scan has analyzed your meal and matched it to foods in the fatsecret database, you’ll see a list of the foods detected in your photo, along with their estimated serving sizes.

If there are any incorrect foods, you can uncheck them to remove them. You can also tap on any food item to adjust the portion size if needed.

Once you're happy with the results, tap ‘Add’ to log everything to your Diary under the chosen meal.
