Super frustrated! I know it’s water weight because it came over night. But I am really struggling with water retention and I’m not sure why. I drink a lot of water and also green tea daily. I can’t lower my salt intake because my blood pressure has always been low and dr says to keep my salt in my diet. So I am not sure how to counteract that. Any ideas??

well ive actually cut my water intake in half. i have low BP too. i do get thirsty nd high salt intake tends to cause water retention. but that works for me.. im not as bloated with water. just a thought.

This is a total guess but maybe try adding a little more salt and electrolytes?? Your body might be retaining water trying to keep a balance? Do a little online research and see what you find. I know I feel better with a little less water and more electrolytes. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestions! I really appreciate it. I drink about 60oz a day. I haven’t looked yet, at my ratio of sodium vs water. It’s a really good point about the electrolytes! I will look at that. Off hand, does anyone know what a normal sodium intake “should” be vs water? And things high in electrolytes?

There’s many other reasons that water retention can occur, for example certain medications, higher sodium intake, higher carbohydrate intake, doing too much exercise, going too low in calories, not drinking enough fluids, certain medical problems, sweating too much, water is also expelled through each breath as vapors. And many many more reasons

What type of diet do you eat? If you are doing a low carb high fat diet you need more salt and electrolytes than on a typical diet...

We all vary by +2 / -2 lbs daily. When fat is lost, the cells take up water which is denser. When the water is released, we get the woosh, and a pound or 2 lost overnight.

Thanks so much everyone! All excellent points. Right now, I’m basically keto. Under 20 carbs a day but usually closer to 13. I drink plenty of water. I’m thinking this may have a lot to do with electrolytes vs sodium balance. I looked at things that can cause retention, and I realized that I don’t eat enough of the foods that assist with electrolytes. Also need to up my magnesium and potassium. I’m exact same weight today so this is really hanging on. Things that usually get rid of it, aren’t working. So that led me to research the suggestion of electrolytes/sodium. Waiting on the WHOOSH that I know is coming!!

I hope it helps! I started a low carb high fat diet in January at about the same weight you started at...I’m down 20 lbs. There have been stalls and ups and downs so be patient. I take 1/4t nosalt each day for potassium and I take a magnesium glycinate pill twice a day. I try to add pink Himalayan salt to my foods and I drink about 64oz water each day. I have also found that taking 1T Apple cedar vinegar in 8oz water twice a day before lunch and dinner has helped me with water retention. Good luck!
