And with a fizzle the oatmeal experiment is over. After doc appt re CIMT labs today (day before she sent over results and recommendations) she has agreed to delay statins and we are going to try berberine, red yeast rice and one other supplement (forgot which) until labs in august. She thinks my labs next month will be screwed up due to the daily oatmeal implementation and was a little aghast that that was my plan to try and get LDL numbers down. Also discovered that i have access to a nutritionist as much as desired at no additional charge. I had forgotten they had a nutritionist on staff. So am waiting for that initial appt. Back to higher protein lower carbs i go. SMASH fish was recommended but i detest literally every type of SMASH fish. I feel moderately better. Interestingly she was not surprised that i was struggling with the scale incorporating oatmeal (carbs) vs protein. She said body converts that to sugar pretty quickly which totally made sense to me. It is NOT always as easy as CICO but sure wish it was. Onward and upward🫣

Oatmeal did nothing for my labs either.

Morticia doc was lets just say the opposite of a happy camper. She asked me why i decided oatmeal. I said fiber and i like oatmeal so….stay tuned for end of summer to see how the natural method vs statin scrip pans out. How’s your husband doing?

I remember looking up information on what foods to eat to lower cholesterol and it seems like oatmeal was at the top of the list! I was eating it for a few weeks but only twice a week. Haven't had it for about 2 months. I remember buying fish oil supplement, and it was so big I could not swallow it! I have a really hard time swallowing pills. I have to chew the 800 mg Ibuprofen pill

I have to look up SMASH fish. I ate oatmeal every day last year when I lost a lot of weight, and felt like it kept me full (I didn't do the packet stuff with all the sugar), I'm guessing you weren't either? My last labs were good, but luckily, minimal family history. Meaning ppl in my fam had issues, but they were smokers, so not genetic. I'll be curious to find out what your nutritionist recommends for meals. 😀

Love oatmeal, but I don't depend on it for fiber. I still consume between 35 and 50 grams per day. I don't know if it helps for heart health. My A1C and cholesterol are both decent. I've been interested in the differences between red yeast rice extract vs statins. I've taken a statin for years. I also take a higher dose of CoQ 10, L-Arginine, and a couple of other supplements for my heart. Hope your results turn out really good with the natural method.

Dazey it is an acronym for salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herring. Yuk yuk and yuk and thank you sis!!

Fritzy im with you. Those pills are gargantuan. Surely there is a liquid? I dont know but seems like would be a better idea to deliver that way than those huge pills. You are chewing ibuprofren? Icky

Badjujugirl its just an acronym. Salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herring. Doc said my diet is pretty clean but definitely wants me to go back to high protein focus. 100-120 grams per day minimum. Also one of the tests they did for the soft placque buildup in carotid artery indicates there is no genetic component although mom, grandma and great grandma all died from cardiovascular disease my auntie and uncle all said none had clogged arteries. I know my mom’s heart was enlarged and the other side was essentially dead for last part of her life. I had forgotten i could see their nutritionist as much as needed so i will be utilizing that for sure. First appt isn’t till end of next month tho.

Bionici-have you had any ill effects from the statin? I heard coq10 was a must to accompany to help offset negative effects. Stay tuned end of summer to see what new labs show. She said my labs from next month will be screwed up from all the carbs ive been ingesting via oatmeal so…

I either chew or cut in quarters or turn to powder with a pill crusher. Someone suggested swallowing with orange juice or applesauce but I still can't swallow the whole pill.

CoQ10 is amazing!! and i can stomach salmon outta that list. But pregnancy has made it very difficult to endure.

I’d recommend walnuts to lower cholesterol. I dropped my cholesterol 30 points in less than 6 months. You look great 👍🏼

Good luck with the nutritionist ! Hopefully you will be open to the suggestions of a heart healthy diet.

Im curious in what way will eating oatmeal mess up your labs? There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just oats? In terms of relying on oats for fiber, yeah, oatmeal gives you a couple grams of fiber a day, hardly a boost. If you want to increase fiber intake, aim to double or triple or quadruple your total daily intake - you have to do it at every meal/snack through the entire day. It’s still probably worth a try. Since you’re supposed to eat high protein - beans 😆 good luck with the things you will be trying, as well, I hope they help.

I don't know about your labs, but your abs are flat!

I am so glad you did this experiment and shared your results. I've been tempted to do the same experiments but have been terrified of adding the high carbs and calories (and relatively low protein) in oats. The SMASH fish idea is fascinating - I adore all the fish in that line up, so I'm going to start adding more of those. Great information!

https://www.northottawawellnessfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/NOWF-Fiber-Content-of-Foods.pdf. YOH if you are using fiber as a way to reduce cholesterol you should focus on fruit, veg, nuts, seeds and grains that are the highest in soluble fiber. I attached a list for you of the common foods highest in fiber if you want to check it out. Insoluble fiber is great for our health but doesn’t provide cholesterol lowering benefits. Again….I hope your session with a nutritionist provides you with the help you need to get your levels in a better range.

My sister told me about the SMASH Fish.. but I had forgotten them. Thanks Have you tried Chia seeds for fiber? "https://www.thehealthyapron.com/chia-seeds-pros-cons/" You look great so I hope your health will be great, too. I had both my knees replaced last year one in May and the other in July.

Oh, sorry one thing I forgot to mention. I didn't like salmon for years, I could eat smoked salmon. And, found it to be delissh on a wh. grain bagel with Neufchatel cr. cheese and capers. Now I like salmon, but it has to be properly prepared with a nice crust and love it with a nice caesar salad.
