59Carol's Journal, 24 February 2019

I am logging a 0.4 gain this morning. All good. We have had a very difficult week.

As I have referenced before my husband's surgery went poorly. We expected to return home after he healed from the incision. Plans have changed. He was moved down the hall into the palliative ward this week. We have been told that he will die there and will not be going home again.

This was devastating news. It made us understand that things were more imminent than we realized and it felt very final to realize that we were not going to enjoy our home together again.

Dave has remained on a emotional even keel but it is hard. We are focusing on the moment right now and staying enjoying our family and time together for now. The end looms but it is being pushed away for now.

Oh dear Carol, just saw your post tonight and have stayed up reading your entire journaling and comments to learn more about your husband and you. It's almost 4am now that I am at the present. My heart aches for you, and yes for your husband and his discomfort too. As a wife of an 82 year old husband with lots of physical problems I have lived, especially the last 6 years, of never knowing when I would lose him. We have been married for 57 years, and as you say, the idea of going on without him is so hard. As the more relatively healthy one, I relate to you, and I wish there was some way I could comfort you. Knowing most wives become widows is not comforting. Statistics don't mean anything. It's you that is in pain, and having to walk through this. I see through all your posts you are a very special, wonderful person, giving to your family. I am glad they are there for you. I do believe in Jesus Christ so that is where I get my strength to go on, and will be praying for you, and your family also, because of course they are hurting too. We not only hurt for the circumstances we are in, but we hurt seeing our loved ones hurting too. Our daughter has stage 4 cancer, and our son was killed by a drunk driver. If not for the Lord, I wouldn't want to go on, nor would be able to either. I am so sorry you are experiencing these devastating circumstances. I will hold you up in prayer.

Very sad news Carol, I don't know how I would handle that myself. Please know we are thinking about you, and you need to use all your energy and focus for your family now. God bless you.

I know that death is part of God's plan for each of us. But, it hurts so very much. My heart goes out to you as you go through this sad time. Take care.

So sorry to hear this update. But be strong and don’t give up to quickly. I’ve seen cancer patients hold on much much longer than doctors expect sometimes. Every day is precious. Praying for you and your husband. Hope he is comfortable as possible?

Thank you to all of you. I hear your genuine concern in all you have written. Snowwhite I so understand your fears. Truly enjoy your time together. That sounds cliche but no point in borrowing trouble before you need to. As for my husband we are taking the time to be together and although we know what is coming we are trying not to dwell on it all of the time. We are concentrating on the present circumstances and try not to look further than a day or two. I am off to the hospital in an hour. Take care of yourselves and love the people with you!
