I have been reading and watching videos about the whole "Bulletproof" diet...including the coffee, which I learned about here. It is intriguing to me, because it reflects the direction I have been heading in for some time now. Eating more fat, less carbs....and getting those carbs from veggies. Eating meat that is locally sourced and grass fed or pasture raised when possible. And focusing more on greens than high carb veggies.

The coffee is crazy sounding to anyone who believes the USDA prescription for a healthy diet. Start your day with 10 oz. of coffee, blended with at LEAST 2 Tbsp of Kerrygold (or pasture raised) butter, unsalted of course, and 2 Tbsp of MCT. MCT is medium chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil. They are all of a length that is easily absorbed, and believed to help kick in ketosis quickly, and stimulate your metabolism. So, a cup of coffee with a big dollop of fat, blended up to creamy goodness. If you are raising your eyebrows, I can't blame you.

The thing is, it has worked as advertised for me. I had some instead of lunch yesterday...actually with some chai tea...and this morning for breakfast. I feel sharper, and more energized than I have in a very, very long time. Ketosis was definitely in gear...many, many trips to the bathroom yesterday! And that was after having a good breakfast a few hours earlier. And the scale was down, even though my calories were over my recently lowered RDI. Today the ketosis effect should be greater since I am having it first thing, as prescribed.

I am a skeptic about most things that sound this "extreme"....or I used to be more of a skeptic. But after having so little success with calorie counting and a low fat diet, I have been more willing to try other things. And I have been seeing more success with these other approaches. In the end, I don't think losing weight is a one-size fits all experience. And I think our own biochemistry changes over time, so things that worked for me in the past...Weight Watchers, for instance,...no longer do. I plan to try out this coffee for breakfast for the next two weeks, and see how I feel. The better the coffee you use....processed gently, and fresh, with no mold or mycotoxins...the better it is for you. I am lucky to have a top notch coffee roaster right here in town.

Maybe this will be a little blip. Maybe not. I am willing to give it a go, and see what happens. I have already been eating high levels of fat in my diet, to good effect. The only real change is this coffee concoction. BTW...it kind of screwed with FS's calculations. This morning after entering my "breakfast", my pie chart showed 102% of my calories as fat, and -2% carbs. Now that is what I call a low carb diet!

Argh! SO, you put the butter and coconut oil IN the coffee? I have used MCTs in the past - but not the super high fat process. I have read about using higher fat dairy products to stimulate metabolism. I get most of my carbs from green veggies and a variety of fruits. Once in a while a sweet potato, and lately summer farm corn - but that s not the norm. I will be curious to see how you do on your new plan! Good luck.

Sounds gross, huh? But when you put it all in a blender, and mix it up so it is frothy, it actually is pretty yummy. I don't have any MCT yet...so I used coconut oil this morning. This guy is actually really likes sweet potatoes, once in a while. He talks about a carb loading day once a week, when you eat sweet potatoes, carrots, and other similar veggies. I am starting with the coffee, and will progress slowly from there.

WOW - it will be interesting to see how it works for you. I know with traditional Atkins people eat a ton of fat (bacon, cream, etc.) - but in your plan it sounds more like "good" fats.

It is very interesting to see what works for different people. I really hope this gets you where you want to be. I'm so totally enjoying farm-fresh produce of all kinds I couldn't imagine your diet for me, but I'm eager to see how it Soto's for you. Coffee definitely makes me sharper in the morning!

It's so true, the "one size fits all" diets just don't work. They may in the short term, but we can't live in the short term. I think that's why this site is so fantastic. We can learn and try so many things here without judgement or "I told you so's". I'll be interested to see how this one works out. I know that coffee in moderation is extremely good for you, especially your brain. I know tea is fantastic for metabolism and so many more health areas. I'm just learning about fats, especially coconut oil. Keep us in the loop on this one.

I say GO FOR IT!!! btw, congrats on two kids with cars!!!! OMG! I know I only do well when I get about 30% protein in my diet, no processed foods yada yada. Fat, bring it on, but I still need to watch the total calories. I think everyones body works a little differently, for me, no sugar (all though I don't stick to it toatally yet (stress)))))) but I feel so much better not worrying about fat, clean unprocessed food and veggies! Can't wait to hear how the coffee mixture works out. Hey, butter is just extra whipped cream anyways!!!

I am trying out the high fat low carb diet all the way, not just the coffee. I had a half cup of half and half and a half cup heavy whipping cream in my coffee this afternoon. I usually add coconut oil to other things I eat (I add it to the veggies I eat, like Kale and chard) I am on week 3 and have been steadily losing and I feel pretty good too. Week one though was not so fun, had the Keto flu or carb flu. I am giving it a 3 month trial and will reassess then. My motivation to try this diet: I read about a woman who started eating this way in 1962 and she lost her extra weight and looks fabulous to this day (at 74!) http://www.second-opinions.co.... I am hoping this is my long term lifestyle change that will help me find my optimal weight and be healthy...Anyway, best of luck to you with it!
