LSG417's Journal, 22 March 2018

So the scale said 142 again this morning. Two days in a row now. We shall see how the next few days go. I may have to change some things up. I had some blood work done yesterday. Everything was good except my BUN/Creatinine ratio, which was quite high. The simply answer is dehydration. Worse would be kidney failure. Since my GFR was normal tho, I'm going to take it as dehydration. That's an added benefit of working in the lab for the doctor's I see...I can look at my results probably before the doctor even does, lol. Nothing like self diagnosis! One remedy tho for reducing my creatinine levels is to make sure I'm getting enough fiber, which I'm certain I'm not, since trying to lower my carb intake. Things aren't "moving" as regularly as they should be/used to. This is a major concern for me when doing certain diets that are restrictive of particular macros. You deny your body of essential minerals and nutrients. I would just advise any of you doing Keto to have your doctor do blood work periodically to make sure your vital levels aren't going too high or too low. I'm going to have to adjust my diet to avoid any complications with my kidneys. Today is sunny here in Western NC and supposed to be in the upper 40's. Better than snow and mid 30's!! Happy Thursday all!

Be aware that excessive protein diets can raise creatine levels, which is hard on kidneys.I try to stay to .75 grams of protein per body pound. I think this is a bit high. I had the same results from the blood work. All else looked exceptional but this. You take a smart approach to life; you'll get it worked out.

Yeah, I've checked that too, but going back before I even started doing low carb, my protein has stayed at or below the recommended level. I'm going to start by increasing my fiber and being more diligent about my water intake. Some days I know I don't get enough. I'm gonna be sloshing by the end of the day, lol.

Yes, Glen, I think sometimes we focus on the "skinny" rather than how we get there and how it may be affecting our health. I do want to lose more weight, but more importantly, I want to be healthy.

The other thing you didn’t mention that contributes to an elevated creatinine level is a diet too high in protein which can lead to significant damage to your kidneys. Biggest offender is a high meat based diet..

protien doesnt damage kidneys, people with damaged kidneys dont handle large amounts of it well, among many other things.
