Just got home from the Lowcountry Cultural Center. All I can say is, "WOW!" . The displays are interesting historical vignettes, and there are brochures from many interesting sites in the area. I learned that the founder of the Center was a young man with an intense love for the area, whose family has been here for many generations. He inherited a lot of property and money, but died of cancer before he was able to see his dreams come to fruition. His will stated that the money was to be used to rehab all the old, run down properties, and to create mini-centers to preserve the heritage of the area. The old filling station is a wonderful first step.
The presentation by Sallie Ann Robinson was fantastic!!!! As she made nut-and-apple salad and fried ribs, she regaled us with stories of growing up on Daufuskie Island, off the coast of South Carolina. How they gleaned and grew most of their food, and what the Gullah culture was. She had a teacher in the little school there, who changed her perception of the world. His name was Pat Conroy. You might have heard of him. ;)
The food was definitely not Keto, but worth falling off the wagon for! Simple, delicious, and satisfying. It was just a tasting, not a full meal, so I'm not worried about the impact.
I got to meet a long-time Facebook friend in person. He was the one who informed me about the event. It was grand! I also made some new friends that I hope I will get to know better in the future.
All in all, it was a big step out of my usual hermit box, and an incredibly joyous and satisfying evening!

It was really fun! And I got a signed cookbook of hers, too. It's got recipes for 'nose-to-tail' eating, like ham hocks and chitlins, pig tail soup, oxtails and beans. I'm going to try to make them low carb, but I am going to try them!
