Becca P's Journal, 13 May 2016

Several years ago when I was researching menopause(preparing for the day!) The Dr./instructor said something that made me pause. That bone density is very important as we age and there are three groups of women who are at risk for fractures.
1. Younger postmenopausal with risk factors of fracture,
2. Weight of less than 127 pounds,
3. Family history of spine or hip fracture.
At the time I weighed 125 and wondered why the 127 #(sounded magical for some reason!) I believe it had to do with weight resistance building bone.

All this to say I wonder at and have a difficult time "supporting" some of the folks here who want to weigh an extremely low weight. I don't know if they are just very young people doing a school project, a very short person who really can weigh that weight healthfully or some one with a eating disorder who in that case I want to encourage to get help beyond the scope of the good people here on this board. I wish we hade more than a "support" button! Anybody else wonder about this?

yep'...i've seen a lot of "Cheerleaders" saying things like..."you can do it...", "you'll get there"...but when you look at the profile, it's someone younger trying to get to 105lbs and their 5'9". I don't support eating disorders on either end of the spectrum. On a side note, the # of 127 is very random and unsubstantiated, as I workout with several women who can lift and push some serious weight. It comes down to loading the bones with heavy weights...not light weights and many reps, but heavy weights and few reps...

As I mentioned, this was several years ago (my memory!) and I believe the explanation was that when a women weighed less than 127 during the whole of her adult life, they experienced a higher % of hip/spine fractures. I used to lift fairly heavy, now I lift heavy every day ( :p ) but not for long! Thanks for your input :)

it was probably back in the day when if a woman was breaking a sweat or in a gym, it was only to clean up...

strange, I never had symptoms of menopause. I think it was how I was eating, not taking any meds, no smoking, and no alcohol

SW, I thought I was going to skate through also, not so. I thought I had hedged all bets but I didn't plan on degenerative bones, kind of slowed me down.

Degenerative bones....supplement with Cissuss Quadrangularis (Super Cissus), can help regenerate and strengthen bones. Google "pubmed cissus" pubmed = Published Medical Study...look for the ones relating to use of Cissus in bones, not weight loss. Cissus plus weight bearing exercises could be what you need...

Have not heard of that, will look into it. Thank you. As I mentioned, I did lift several years ago, the pain became that kind you just don't push through, felt pretty betrayed by my body. Not willing for this to be the "new normal"...I'm working on it :)

To be honest, ANY weight baring exercise will stimulate bone growth. But I hear good things About Cissus. A big thing to watch for is Acidity. If your body is too acidic it will leach Calcium carbonate straight out of your bones to buffer the acidity and bring you back UP in PH. One of the best ways to keep your PH up with Sodium Bicarbonate(Baking Soda), FRESH squeezed Lemon juice. Those will both help to Alkalize your blood so your body wont use bone to do it. Just get a digital PH Meter off of amazon. WIll be about 20 or 30 bucks. And there are a few others out there. It would not hurt to get a good Magnesium AND Calcium combo supplement. The two absolutely should be take together for proper absorption.

Agreed..Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium are the most overlooked and beneficial supplements.

Darn tootin.

Take my calcium, potassium, magnesium every evening like a good girl! Thank you :) So, any other thoughts about folks who are wanting to weigh very low weights? Is there a net of sorts to identify the too young, eating disorders, bogus accts.?

I usually look at what they're eating, if they are exercising, what the goal weight is, and what the age is. Given this set of variables, you can usually determine a lot. If you have a high school cross country runner, these girls are notorious for eating disorders. The flip side is the obese person that has gone 180deg....lost weight and is now binging and vomiting...either way, it's still an eating disorder. Ideally you want to look at age, height and skeletal frame size, as this will give you a good weight range regardless of activity.

Well, I do believe we have one who is young and wanting to be a little TOO small. You guys know her im sure. I cant remember her name off the top of my head though. I think she is like 126 and wanted to weigh 100. And is already incredibly thin. I don't know about a net on here to be honest. Although it isn't a bad idea.

Oh sorry, what I am really asking is if on this site(FS) there is any kind of moderation that takes action of any kind. Sorry I was confusing. There are so many new posters every day that I usually skim but when someone asks or comments I might look at their history. I concur with what you said.
