BuffyBear's Journal, 28 August 2011

Just got back from Wal-Mart. They were putting out their Halloween Candy - just another reminder that fall is coming.

I have a love/hate relationship with fall. Typically with the coming of cooler weather I get an increase in appetite. On top of that I am faced with a slew of birthday parties, Halloween, and then another batch of birthday parties. Then Thanksgiving comes, which begins the month long Festival of Face Stuffing.

OK - so this year is going to be different. I haven't quite figured it all out yet, but it will be different.

Thank you Shari :) I have found that I am fond of the shakes as a sweet treat, and I don't think they really have the sugar alcohols and the vanilla one is only 1 carb :)

Pamela - All of the holidays are now marred by the retailers trying to make as much money off each one as they possibly can. Guess we might as well get used to it.

Missy - when offered cake (or whatever) do you respond "I can't have it on my diet"? I found that a simple "I don't care for any right now" works wonders. There is no need to have to explain or defend your every bite of food.

Buffy - so you're gonna hate me for saying this but the Haloween candy doesn't really bother me, cause I've never been a candy nut ! Also that fall is coming is great, it means it's almost time for us to go back to Arizona for the winter :) Not trying to rub it in to anybody, since last year was our first Arizona winter, it's just really nice not to have to freeze in Kansas & shovel snow :(

My friend's and family know that I would love to eat that cake or ice-cream or drink that cherry pepsi that my brother went completely out of his way to get for me, so they would think I was sick or something if I said I didn't "want" it without any explanation lol

After awhile (several months for me) my body no longer craves those things (even seeing them in the store or smelling them doesnt' matter anymore) If I try to eat forbidden items, they no longer taste good to me. If you stick with it long enough, your body will actually crave the healthy items over the sugar and starches. I was dreading Thanksgiving a few months back, but after tasting potatoes several different times (and styles) I think I can honestly say I won't miss them at Thanksgiving and I'm looking forward to making mashed cauliflower instead. So I'll be full on turkey and veggies. As for halloween, I'll just eat sugar free chocolates, but not too many. Seriously, when I eat/drink off plan I feel sick..bloated ect. My body knows what is good for me, I just need to keep telling my brain (remember the last time we had ice cream? Remember how sickeningly sweet it was, remember how uncomfortable you felt after you were done?)

It's only been about a month for me so far but I was proud that I did not give in and I made it through the party without having anything that I wasn't supposed to have. I know it will take time to lose all cravings but I just take it one day at a time :)

LOL - I had a dream the other night that I ate Chocolate Cake that I swear I had to wonder if I really ate it or not when I woke up!! I was soooo relieved it was just a dream! Anyway, my biggest thing for fall is fresh apples from the orchard, plus they make the most amazing apple pies there; I usually get several of those for the freezer; PLUS they make Granny's Apple bread...OMG...those were soooo good, Oh & pumpkin pies. Oh oh....better do something, like figure out low carb versions quick like! Thanks Buffy! I really think being prepared for challenges such as these make all the difference in changing our habits. You know that visualizing trick really works too, by helping to deal with current issues, but also in dealing with future ones, like Haloween candy...imagining yourself saying No, but Thank You AND really meaning it is very usefull!

Buffy I am like you, it's not worth belaboring the "I can't eat that" thing, I just take something I know I can eat and then look at the other choices being offered, I can usually find something "legal" Oh and I also appreciate all of my fs buddies big time, wouldn't be as easy otherwise without the support of y'all!
