Annabelle3117's Journal, 21 September 2015

Just finished up a weekend of second shift clinicals. When I enrolled in nursing school I expected the anxiety, the stress, the late nights studying and the early mornings driving to the hospital. I knew it was going to be both hard and rewarding, and I figured I would probably doubt myself a lot, all of which have come true at some point in the last fourteen months.

What I did not expect, however, was after a weekend of working my ass off for free to want to go back on Monday. I want to go back and check on the patients I interacted with. I want to make sure their pain needs are addressed, bed linens are changed, they are clean and comfortable, and that they are making progress in therapy. I didn't expect that when my patients eyes welled up with tears as his family left for the day that my eyes would too as I reassured him that I understood how difficult it was to be away from family. I was a warm touch, and a kind ear to listen as he told me all about his family. I didn't expect the gratitude in his wife's eyes when she sincerely thanked me each day for taking care of her loved one. I didn't expect to be so profoundly impacted by the privilege in participating in the lives of others.

I am intimidated by the nursing field some days, as it is a heavy weight of responsibility to carry around but then other days I wonder if I would ever be fulfilled choosing a different road.

Just my thoughts for the day. Have a good one, buddies.

Sounds like you've chosen the right path. :) You took me back to a year ago when my dad was in the hospital after suffering his stroke, the nurses who we saw every day were our line to know how he was doing and what progress he was making, and I still appreciate everything they did for us and for him. You are going to be a wonderful nurse!

God Bless you. I just got back from leaving my Dad at the hospital and I hope he gets the kind of care and compassion that you display.

The characteristics of a great nurse. As a mother of a child born sick, and many hospital visits, and as a person who will one day need care around the clock due to illness or age, I am thankful there are nurses like you :)

What a beautiful journal entry - and on behalf of other chronic patients (I have cirrhosis and a few others which have landed me in the hospital a lot), thank you. Thank you for being you, because what you describe can only come from a truly compassionate person who cares. Before my husband died - at 31 - we spend a lot of time in the hospital and to this day I'll never forget one very special nurse who, every single shift, made a point of checking to see if he was comfortable but you know what else? She always asked me how *I* was doing. I'll never forget her - and your patients will never forget you, either.

Haven't I been telling you from the beginning that this was what you were meant to do? Glad you have finally realized that this IS worth all the effort and that you are going to be beyond a "good" nurse. You are going to be a GREAT nurse!!!

fully support you entry and I know exactly where you are coming from. my daughter is in her 2nd year at university studying to be a nurse and like you they have to split there time between hospital assignments which are normally 2 - 3 month duration followed by another 2-3 months lectures. A lot of uni students work a 32 academic week wherby the medical professions have to work 46 academic week. Its hard work but very rewarding, you have the right personal qulaities to make a good nurse. good luck
