Overweight most of my adult life (from late 20s on) with some peaks and valleys. Really ballooned after laid off from work in late 2008 (never, ever lost a job before -- rather, had always been in an 'upwardly mobile' trajectory until then). Began working from home which led to a very sedentary lifestyle coupled with poor eating habits. Weighed myself for the first time in years while on vacation at the beach in late May (197 lbs.). The summer heat depressed my appetite following vacation and I lost some weight without even really trying. Decided a couple of weeks later I wanted to 'try' in earnest. Previous successful weight loss attempts included food and exercise 'tracking' -- that's when I ran across the fat secret website. Officially began my healthier lifestyle on June 15th at 188 lbs. Don't want to be overly optimistic, but something feels 'different' this time. Thus far, I've had no junk food or sweet cravings, nor any need to allow for 1 'cheat' day a week as in the past. Still, it's too early for pats on the back and being overconfident.

Amount of calories
My personal experience (and echoed by many other more 'tenured' FSers) has been that the FS calculator runs a bit high -- early on, I was referred to the Calorie Calculator on www.calculator.net by another FSer, and have been using it ever since. I think it offers more input variables and allows you to select an RDI based on how much you want to gain/lose (up to 2+/- lbs. per week). It's served me well thus far as I 'split the difference' b/w a 1- and 2-lb. per week loss RDI and I've averaged just a hair under 2 lbs. lost per week.

Cheat Days
So, I joined FS just about a month ago, and today is the first day I've felt hungry (when I shouldn't -- I've had plenty to eat) and had a sincere temptation to overeat. When I previously followed a similar WOE (~1200 calories of relatively healthy food choices) with regular exercise (both cardio and strength), I did well -- Back then, I initially allowed myself 1 'cheat' day a week, which I only enjoyed on occasion (most times, I didn't 'need' a cheat day nor desire to take advantage of it).
I haven't been restricting to 1200 calories a day 100% of the time this go round (it's been more of a 'soft goal'Wink -- my overall cal intake average is running ~1300, but in the last week it's been trending closer to 1550 (still below my RDI of 1900 w/o exercise), and I'm still running a calorie deficit every day. But now I feel I'm treading dangerously close to a slippery slope -- am I feeling hungry when I shouldn't BECAUSE I've increased my caloric intake? If I go back to more closely following 1200 cals/day, should I reintroduce a 'cheat day'? Curious as to other FS members' thoughts/results with regular cheat days.
