Sandy701's Journal, 22 July 2011

I walked 3.8 miles this morning after waiting for the rain to stop. Doggies went along for .8 which was fine since the sun was coming out and the humidity was pretty nasty. Still walking at/about a 3 mph pace.

Part of my reading lately had me over on the Atkins site where about a week ago, there was a continuation of a discussion about the "magic" 50 total/net carb number. I won't try to paraphrase all the various details but it seems that there's been a fair amount of success when individuals, who've been somewhat stuck utilizing net carb levels, switch to keeping total carbs under 50. Even some of the longer-term successful people have chimed in about their success in getting weight loss moving again.

After looking at my total carb averages over many months, I was surprised to notice that last fall my total carbs were less than 40, on average, pretty much from the beginning of my tracking last June to the end of last year. Since the first of this year, however, I've been more in the mid- to upper-40's range! And, there are clearly days this month (and before) when I will go over 50 total carbs, yet keeping my net carbs in the low to mid-30's, which is where I want to be.

People talk about this 50 total carb level as a breakpoint between being in ketosis or not. I don't think of it that way, as I personally feel there's a lot of "ketosis" talk out there that's not quite accurate. But I will say that I believe that the 50 carb level does mark a typical, average point where one's body shifts from primarily fat-burning to not primarily fat-burning. As I understand this, it's because the body simply has more available carbohydrates to burn when one ventures over 50.

Of course, the discussion over on Atkins then goes into sugar alcohols and fiber and how they fit into this. The answers aren't all known, but I can't argue with the success of some of the people who I believe really know their Atkins! So, I'm giving it a try for awhile, trying to keep my net carbs where they are (30's) but keeping my total carbs under 50, perhaps even under 40, if I can manage it. For me, that means the Atkins bars need to be a once-in-a-while food because they pack 11 total carbs, even though the net carbs are 2. Eleven total carbs is 22% of a 50-total-carbs daily limit! That's a lot for 3-4 bites. If I think about it, I just need to go back to some of the meal menus I ate back last summer and early fall.

Now, for anyone who's still new to the Atkins program who may read this...this is NOT advice for any newbies. People first embarking on Atkins need to go by the book. This is just some tweaking being done by me (no longer a 20-, 30-, or 40-something female) after being on this program for almost 16 months with 71 pounds lost and coming within 19 pounds of goal (within 9-10 pounds of normal BMI).

Sandy - I may have to go do some reading. Haven't been on any other site except FS for months. Glad you are giving doggies a break. Mine only leaves the air conditioning for necessities only.

Buffy, they LOVE to go for walks, no matter how hot it is! But my Lab gal has that heart murmur, so I've got to watch to keep her from overheating...the extra panting she does puts a strain on her inefficient heart valves. But they're both pretty happy to get back inside where it's cool - OR if they're still hot, they'll head straight for the pool!!

Sandy I read this too. I agree, I think for those people more sensitive to carbs and those a bit older it makes sense to try to keep the total under 50 IF weight loss stalls. I am a little leary of keeping carbo totals that low for extended perods of time though. I know that that is heresy to Atkins devotees! I think you are right about the bars though. It would be better to use those carbs towards vegetable or fruit totals. I just love them for breakfast because I am not a breakfast eater. So many times I make a low carb breakfast and cannot eat it! The hubby gets my share!

Lisa, we all need to find what works best for us, even within any particular WOE's "rules." I've been using a particular flavor of Atkins bar forever, it seems. I drop them for awhile just to see if I'm sensitive to them, but it appears I'm not. So 1 bar per day is fine by me and fits into my overall eating pattern just great. But now that I'm shifting focus a bit, those higher TCs in the bars are definitely better spent on veggies and salad ingredients!
