I couldn't sleep last night. I take that back. I could sleep, my brain couldn't. Whenever I wake up the 2 year old in my brain thinks it's time to play and won't stop talking. I thought to myself I would use this time to try and meditate. They've learned meditation changes your brain for the better so I want in on this. I also thought maybe I could just bore myself back to sleep. WRONG! My brain was fascinated with meditation. Free reign to think of ANYTHING! I don't remember everything because there was too much, but I do remember a puppet show, dancing, me standing there in yoga pajamas (whatever that is) in the middle of a circle of a dozen other me's yelling at them all to shut up because I was meditating, and then the Rolling Stones singing 19th Nervous Breakdown. I'm not sure what all that means, but I think I picked the right user name. Meditation + ADHD = weirdness

Next time you meditate, don't think. Totally focus on your breathing. That's it. And forget skipping the light fandango.

Don't look at me I suck at meditation too. I run down grocery lists and try to code games. Frankly I usually just go with it until my brain says OK Im done.

I get that issue 100%, never thought of it as the brain playing, love it. Valerian is my solution. Herbal capsule that quiets the brain, it has some anti anxiety properties as well. Might try it, helps when stress creeps in and tries to take over or my sleep patterns go wonk.

Occupy th ebrain. Count up, 1 at a time with each breath and slow your breath consciously. It's enough to occupy the brain and the body tends to follow the breath.

I listen to an audio book, one of 3 that I rotate through. It gives my 300-ring circus something to do while I sleep.

Meditation works. It takes time to empty out enough junk to realize how deep it resides. Keep at it...

I love your user name. We all need a few loose screws just so we have a little character to our lives otherwise we would be quite boring. The next time your inner child wants to play ask you inner child the type of game they want to play. Acknowledging your inner child is important. I agree mediation is an excellent way to relax, but can I also suggest that you get a guided meditation cd as this will help you to relax while it takes your mind on a journey. Give it a shot.

Definitely going to try meditation again. Maybe it will help the adhd calm down eventually. That or I will write a very interesting book. I've never thought of a meditation cd. I just tried to focus on my breathing and the part of my brain that keeps the children in my head quiet was too busy focusing to sush them.

Guided meditation is cool. There are quite a few out there.

I agree with ClassicRocker. Guided is a good way to start. You can often find MP3's and there are some things on YouTube as well. I don't currently practice meditation regularly (tho I should), but one of the other ways I tried to keep my mind clear was by either counting my breaths or 'naming' them. Focus on your breathing, paying attention to all the aspects of it. And count each time you take a breath. It doesn't matter if you count both in and out, or just one way. The idea is that you're distracting your brain from all the other stuff. When your thoughts drift (they will), don't judge. Just bring them back and starting counting again. With a little practice, you get better and better at it. By 'naming' your breaths, I just mean using words like 'in' and 'out' or 'breathing in', etc., instead of counting.
