debbra's Journal, 06 February 2009

It's the EVIL, CRUEL, AND DEVILISH evening hours that pull me down. I'll be passively minding my own business. Then all of a sudden, out of no where, this black cloud will appear above my head, hover for a moment. I look up, take note of it, tremble. I'll have a momentary feeling of self preservation. Help! Where can I run and hide to get away from this evil force that is chasing me, laughing at me, hoping to grab my arms, my legs, my hands!? Then I'm pulled, yanked. My feet stumble towards the big white box, cold and stiff. I open it. I feel momentarily peaceful as a rush of warm feelings come over me. I feel like I'm with friends, and I reach out, hoping to bask in the warmth of their lovely and soothing spirit. But it's a trap. I suddenly awaken, realizing that the black cloud had managed to cover my head, my eyes, my mouth, my body. I realize that this cruel villain has yet again overpowered me and taken me down, and it is this villain that I must learn to overpower. For I intend to win!

And now on to practical matters: For Friday, February 6, 2009: I treadmilled 90 minutes, 5.52 miles, 20 minutes of it was 3.6 mph at level 6 incline. The rest was 3.7 mph, level 7 incline and about 15 minutes of it was 3.8 at level 8 incline. Doing it every day has been enabling me to add a little more each time. But I'm going to try to run a little tomorrow.

I finished my treadmill at about 1:45 p.m. And it's 3:30 p.m. right now, and I'm feeling hungry, shaky, and tired. I hate when that happens. Oh, stop complaining, Debbie! You can do this! Just stick to the plan, stick to the points!

6:30 p.m. Feeling good. The evening gnawing has not started yet. It might not. It tends to stay away the day after I overeat. It's tomorrow I'm more worried about.

i read a while back that eating more fiber not only fills you up, but also helps to keep you from snacking as much after hours...just a thought for you..

Got it, Sweetie! I e-mailed you back as well. What kind of fiber? Is it a pill? I'm gonna try to treadmill now! :)

I take a fiber supplement pill- It is Kroger's generic of Fibercon. I take 2 at night before bed.

You're so cute, Debbra. I couldn't have explained it better myself. You will win. You're stronger than the big white box.

How did you do with the nighttime eating? I am wondering if you allow yourself a snack? If you plan in one snack and really enjoy it, would that satisfy your cravings? I have most every night one Edy's grand light ice cream in a sugar cone (4 ww points). It feels decadant and I really savor and enjoy it and don't feel guilty about it. It's when you are sneaking in a bite here and there that you feel guilty, don't really enjoy it, and suddenly there is a huge log of calories. Another trick if you do get those nighttime munchies and they just won't stop is to replace that time with something else. For instance, you could go to a special spot with a nice cup of hot tea or water with crushed ice to munch on and read. Or, you can sit on the floor and do some streches and some quiet meditative breathing. Or, you can make yourself have a piece of fruit first (even try a grapefruit- there is nothing in calories but it is a substantial piece of fruit you have to work to eat!) before you allow yourself to have anything else then wait and see if you are still craving the munchies. If this has been your habit, it will be hard to break, but you just need to break the routine and replace it with something else. Don't let this spoil all the hard work you are doing with the exercise. If you can cut out overeating (not a planned and enjoyed snack) at night, I think you will rapidly see weight loss.

I used to keep some low cal ice cream around but I started nibbling on it too much. I think I'm gonna get some, have my hubby put it in the garage fridge, and then I can have it in the evening. I like that advice! Thanks, LLF! :)

You definitely have to tame that villian Debbra! I have the exact same problem which you so eloquently have described. :-)

Oh, that big white box! We've all been in its evil clutches all too often. But all that treadmilling trumps anything the white box can throw at you. You will triumph!
