Kenna Morton's Journal, 10 August 2019

Going to my neighbors tonight for BBQ, Their daughter is here from Ohio for a few days so a get together for local friends and family I have known her since she was in high school so it is always wonderful to see her. Talking about appetizers, appetizers start at 6 pm culminating in dinner at 10-11. Wild boar, bison steaks and lamb on the menu. All sorts of exotic wines and beers (I don’t drink), unusual vegetables dishes and even more unusual deserts. It’s always fun to try these new things. Wild boar is my very favorite meat. I haven’t had bison in a very long time.

The BBQ was truly wonderful and I had such a good time. As always we did start on appetizers about 6pm and meat came off the grill at 10:30. From start to finish it was just a slow casual eating process. Small amounts of lots of different things. She had made most of my favorites and her daughter’s favorite, yucca (cassava) fries with a killer hot sauce that she makes. The fries are baked rather than fried. By the time the lamb, bison and and wild boar was ready it was just eaten by itself with a variety of hot sauces on the side. The wines and hard alcohols and beers were all European, and African and reported as being excellent. I drank my own hibiscus ice tea that I make from the dried plant blossoms and also tasted several tea varieties from India and South Africa. Lots of fun. The daughter will be here another couple days so will probably share a couple more meals with them. I have tried having them to my house for dinner, but the wife eats only vegetarian Indian food. The husband will eat American food if he has to but prefers his wife’s food. When I bake I usually make some for him— he does enjoy quick breads and homemade icecream

I’m so jelly of your gorgeous sounding meal. Just wow, sounds amazing. Where do they source the meat?

We are in Southern California. We have a chain of ethnic markets (Mediterranean, Hispanic, Asian ) that are a real shopping experience. Unusual fruits and vegetables that I have never seen or heard of before. All of their meat, poultry, etc. is Hallah and Kosher. What a difference it makes in flavor. And, some much less expensive than say Albertsons and Ralph’s. And the spices they sell are just amazing. The chain is called FRESH CHOICE. There are 2 close to me. That’s where my neighbors buy all of their meat, except the bison. They buy it from a meat market.

My neighbors were both born in India but were raised in Kenya. Their fathers were both engineers for the government. At high school age all the kids from the work group were sent to England to boarding school and went to college in France. The man came to the USA by himself after college with a total of $100.00 in his pocket. He wanted to build prosthetics. He was accepted to a very prominent program in Los Angeles and managed to go to school while doing odd jobs. After 2 years the woman came to the US . She holds a masters degree in nutrition. She stayed with friends in Chicago and worked until the man finished his program and then they got married. He now owns a company that builds prosthetics and orthotics. They have done extremely well for themselves. He collects durable medical equipment that his patients just return to him when they no longer need it. He refurbishes it all and gives it to people who need it at no charge. He has so many kids who need constant changes in their prosthetics as they grow and he donates his time and the equipment for freeThey have 2 kids in their early thirties. The boy went to medical school at Johns Hopkins and the daughter has two masters degrees in abnormal psychology, she has a clinical practice and teaches at the University in South Carolina. The kids are both just as incredible as their parents are. They treat them like gold. When each of them bought their homes the first thing they did was have small cottages built on their property just for their parents. When my neighbors decided they wanted to do a little remodeling and update their condo the kids hired a contractor and paid for everything. Great story of an immigrant family.
