lonniehuffman's Journal, 21 November 2020

I have a two NSV's to share! I had to adjust the chin strap on my bike helmet because it was way too loose after all the weight I lost. Also, while riding my electric bike, I've been able to turn the power off and do my own pedaling for 80% of our outings, where before I couldn't do any of the pedaling.

I haven't worn my bike helmet this year until we took the bikes out recently and started riding them again. I haven't adjusted the size of the chin strap since losing 75 pounds. It used to be tight against the underside of my jaw, but today it was hanging way too loosely. Before adjusting the strap, I had to take a selfie.

The other day when we took that ride to see Ferguson Lake, the battery on my bike died, and I had to pedal back for about a half mile without the aid of the electric motor. I surprised myself in that I was able to do it, all but the last, very steep hill. Since running out of power and getting stuck like that, I've been turning the battery off and pedaling as much of the way as I can, to conserve power. To my surprise I've only had to turn the power on when we come to the biggest of hills. I had no problem with the flat roads and I was able to power through the smaller hills myself, where I wasn't able to ride anywhere without the power just a year ago.

Photo Descriptions:

1) One of our bike rides took us to and alongside the Colorado River where these date palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera) are growing wild in the wetter areas near the Colorado River.

2) The Colorado River is the natural border between California and Arizona.

3) An egret (Ardea alba) fishing the Colorado River.

4) Riding my bike makes me happy. This is the selfie I took before adjusting the chin strap on my helmet. It used to be tight against the underside of my jaw, but definitely needed adjusting.

5) This is a wild date-producing palm tree. Dates are also cultivated here on several nearby date farms where they have rows and rows of trees like this one.

6) ATVers have carved out lots of trails through the rugged terrain in this area.

7) The climax of my ride today was a great view of Senator Wash Reservoir.

8) Our neighbor has a cool teepee. I snuck a picture of his campsite as the sun was setting this evening.

Grats! We love our e-bikes! Without power assist, we wouldn’t be able to get up the hilly terrain on our 10 mile loop. I do ride mine on the lowest assist setting of one most of the time. Keeps this 71 y o Granny on the move! 🚴

Beautiful, beautiful pictures, but by far, my favorite is the one of you with that loose helmet strap! Many, many egrets in South Louisiana, a birder's paradise.
