shirfleur 1's Journal, 27 February 2020

I often see comments on this site from people advocating for eating "low-carb." And if that is working for you, then that's great. However, I am living proof that you can eat carbs and still lose weight. I'm 76, lead a sedentary lifestyle and average between 1500-1600 calories per day. I also average about 145 carbs a day, and in the last 11 months, I have lost about 65 pounds. Now, I'm not setting any records here, but I'm pretty happy with my loss rate, considering that the only dietary restriction I have is that what I eat fits into my RDI (recommended daily intake). I do mostly eat a balanced diet with lots of meat, fruit and vegetables, but I also eat rice, pasta, bread and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn. I sometimes eat cake, cookies, ice cream and candy. And, occasionally, I eat way more than my RDI. So, if your WOE (way of eating) is creating anxiety and difficulty due to "forbidden" foods, please know, there is another way to be successful. Whichever WOE you choose , I wish you great success on your journey.

you are doing great, Shir! and i agree with you - if it fits in your daily caloric allowance, eat it. no restrictions, unless of course there is some medical reason. there is no one way.

I eat between 150-250g carbs a day, and have lost weight too. I can't imagine depriving myself any certain foods, it just wouldn't work for me. You're doing great Shir!

I am with you. I eat carbs moderately and walk everyday. I have been loosing a pound plus a week. I am training myself mentally that baby steps will lead to 52 pounds lost a year. Depriving oneself sets you up for failure.

If there is anything that I have learned here, I have learned balance, balance, balance. Congratulations on all your accomplishments without feeling deprived.

Great! Yes, it's what ever works for us as individuals. I found out my digestive system and how I feel is so much better when eating low carb. To minimize any possible anxiety I'll have potato or pasta or bread on Sat. or Sun.

Yes, you're doing awesome! Idk why people follow any kind of advice that they should stay away from carbs when the countries with the leanest people have a very high carb diet. I have ~400 per day while getting leaner. Also, I think it's the fact that people call certain foods carbs when they have just as much or more fat calories. Pizza, chips, cakes, pasta, etc.

Low carb eating can help people with pre-diabetes/type 2 diabetes to control their blood sugar, and may ultimately enable them to reverse T2D.

^Low carb isn't needed for that. I know of at least two on here off the top of my head who reversed their type 2 by simply losing fat. Type 2 is primarily caused by obesity and being unhealthy.

I am 395 pounds and already reversed my T2D and I eat carbs. Fasting numbers are normally in the 80's and after eatings 50+ carbs a meal they are around 120-130 which is wonderful, I no longer even take my medication for diabetes. I eat anywhere between 130-175 carbs daily.

2 hours after eating my fasting number is back below 100.

Shirfleur..my Alc was 9.3 and now it's 5.0 all the while I was eating carbs. I tried keto and it legit put me in the hospital.

I am with you. I reduced unnecessary carbs, but still eat bread, quinoa, and farro. And coffee creamer. Losing here too. I get weak and shaky without carbs! You are my rockstar! 💚😁❤

Binkytexas, you are right the type of carb matters. At least it does for me. That's not saying I don't have a piece of cake or chips every now and again lol.
