iulani's Journal, 03 October 2016

So I am gonna turn 58 next Monday, and have had my fair share of food obsessions, dieting obsessions and everything in between. Back in June, I was ready to put my hair up in a bun and sit in a rocking chair and be an old, unfit granny.... due to the pain I was having in my back. Problem was, sitting also hurt...I was miserable...I was just gonna give up. I could barely walk some days...

Enter...Exercise...gentle at first and then I began to push myself. I can't believe I don't groan going up the stairs or pulling weeds or getting out of my truck...What magic is this?

Keep moving everyone, whether it be "Beast mode" or "Baby steps"... :)!

Backs are always a problem. My bone scan showed arthritis in my lower back, and it hurts as we speak. The exercise does help. Have you ever had a doctor check it out? Backs are difficult, for sure. As we get older, you really have to push the pain. I am pretty good with pain from football and such. I think it is about getting, as much exercise as possible, despite the pain, as we get older. Good luck with that. Don't do pain meds either, if possible. That is how my sister went wrong. Best of luck with the back, diet, and exercise, lulani.

Words of wisdom.

Words of wisdom indeed. Here I am at nearly 65. I developed herniated disks in my lower back in 2006, when I was 54. I figured out pretty quickly that walking really helped. Now, 10 years later, I've taken up ice skating. Last Monday, my back was killing me, and I almost skipped skating. But then I thought: Maybe I can skate this pain off. Sure enough -- it worked. Believe it or not, skating, like walking, is great low-impact exercise, even though you could always fall and break your neck. But so far, I've only fallen 3 times since December when I started, and I remain uninjured. Just for good measure, I went for a bone density test a few weeks ago, and I'm fine. So if you are looking for something new....

How wonderful lulani!! I know what you mean though. Since I have been on a good exercise regime, I feel so much better. I do get a little achy from a harder workout, but that is a whole different pain and a good one :) Keep it up!

For some reason I thought you were younger. :)) Moving is definitely the key especially as you age. Instinctively when you are having pain you want to sit, but that will make it worse for sure. Stretching is paramount as well. Kudos to you!!!
