Hermiones Mom's Journal, 18 August 2016

Went for my frozen custard this afternoon and recorded it as a Dairy Queen Blizzard, which is probably as close as I can get to its calorie count. Of course, I'm already running to the bathroom. It will clean me out -- but this is the only the second time I've been for custard since Scooters opened for the season last March. So it's not like I'm stuffing my face with custard. But I've been way to lazy to make my own lactose-free ice cream, and ice cream is just about the only thing I just don't seem to be able to do without permanently. Plus if I don't make the ice cream, I can't eat it, so it's probably better to just plan a trip for custard and be done with it. So that's what I did. I'm not likely to do this again soon...

Hey - there is a place called Culver's and you can find their frozen custard listed in FS food lists - that may be closer and possibly less than Blizzard. I hope you enjoyed your treat!

I have tried lactase tablets and they are very helpful if you are lactose intolerant.

Thanks for the advice. 1) Scooters is about a million times better than Culvers, seriously. We have Culvers in the burbs, and they were my favorite junk food place before I got IBS and didn't dare eat junk food ever. Scooters is only a 6-7 minute drive, and the dogs just love it there. THey get free doggie-sized cones and lots of admiration from other customers. 2) I have tried the lactase tablets repeatedly and they do not work for me. They didn't work for my Mom either. I asked the gastroenterologist about this, and he said there are lots of people who don't get results from the pills. I'm pretty careful about what I eat -- at first I avoided all dairy that didn't specifically say lactose free. But now I eat aged hard cheeses that are made with "cheese culture" because the culture eliminates the lactose. I actually eat much more dairy now than I ever did before now that there's lots of lactose free dairy available. Lactaid even makes ice cream, but it's very poor quality and has about 80 ingredients in it, lots of which I can't pronounce, so I don't eat it. A couple times each summer, I make myself a batch of lactose free ice cream with lactose-free half n half. It's absolutely delicious, so I have to restrain myself from making it very often!
