Fritzy 22's Journal, 19 September 2023

I am feeling so bad and guilty. Yesterday I let Bobby outside and he's usually out just long enough.....maybe 1 minute. But I let him out and quickly went to do something else. Then I forgot about him! I was in the guest room watching the local news and never gave Bobby a 2nd thought. It was at least an hour, probably closer to an hour and a half when I went to see where he was. He usually lays on top of the chair or sofa in the family room or the futon in the living room. He wasn't in either spot so I went to the master bedroom and he was standing at the door, panting. There is a small fenced in area, fenced with wire, almost like deer fencing. There was a deer and at least one turkey on the other side of the fence. Usually he chases them off but they were watching him and me at the door. Maybe they were concerned for him. There is no water on the deck or in that area. Luckily yesterday was a mild day, didn't even reach 80 but still, that was way, way too long for him to be outside. He doesn't bark to let me know he wants to come inside. Every other dog in the neighborhood does (My neighbor's dog has barked for 30 minutes or longer, once at 2am) but not Bobby. Don't know how to teach him. After I got him in, he didn't want to drink water, thought that would be the first thing he would do. He did eventually. I felt so bad, i gave him his dinner early and then gave him his regular dinner later. I tickled him for hours and kept apologizing to him. I went out and made sure there is water on the deck. I don't know why he doesn't think to bark. I got him as a puppy and had been worried about house training him. But it was the easiest thing ever. Once I started taking him outside - usually 5 or 6 times a day, he never had an accident in the house. But, he never lets me know he has to go outside. He will hold it forever until I ask him "do you have to go outside? or go potty?". Then he will run around in circles and run to the door. I have to remember to ask him.

I am glad Bobby is okay.

Thanks Morticia. I am so upset with myself. Wish I could figure out how to get him to bark when he wants something.

I feel ya Fritzy. Have done that too. Had a foster dog who normally went out with the rest of the pack to go potty. Normally, she was the first one in. Same thing, got busy, closed the door, my guys were all visible. Didn't think twice about it. An hour later, was doing a pre bed settle in and was wondering where she was. Went to the back door and there she was. Having a nap on the back deck. It was a cool evening and she is double coated, so no issues with that, but I felt awful that I had overlooked her. Unlike my guys who protest loudly when they want attention, she was a quiet one. Has since been adopted and is thriving with her new mom.

Thanks Annis - I fostered Bobby and his sister when they were pups and after a few weeks decided once one of them got adopted I would keep the other. I've fostered before, but it's too hard to give the dogs up! I'm going to see if I can teach Bobby to speak. I've never been able to do that but I'll try. He doesn't bark much. Barks when someone comes to the door, barks at the squirrels and turkeys and deer or anything that moves outside but otherwise he's just quiet.

It sounds like to me that Bobby was getting his needs met to the point that there was no need to bark. :) I think what you could do is set a reminder on your phone or something that goes off to remind you that you have to remember to do something. Just like a reminder to take your pills, when my routine is off my alarm helps me to remember to take my pills. This way you won't be afraid of this happening again. I hope this helps. Bobby is a very blessed pup to have someone like you taking care of him. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Thanks Little Red - BObby never barks to come in. I know he was standing at the door, wating for me for over an hour. I usually wait by the door or go out with him. I'm not going to do anything else when I let him outside anymore. He usually just takes a few seconds to finish his business. I have set a kitchen alarm to remember to give my cat his insulin if I feed him before the shot is due. But I rarely hear it go off

Everyone makes mistakes. He’s okay, that’s all that matters. I’d stay by the door going forward, too.

My wife has forgotten about our dog being out front a few times. Luckily, she just waits by the front door. She has given us a reminder bark one time. The other times, we end up looking for her and realize she is out front.

We have forgotten our dog outside too. She just wanders around sniffing everything looking for things to make a mess of. They survive.

There are plenty of dogs that are left outside for an hour or more every day! I’m sure your dog had a good little adventure and it seems he didn’t overheat considering he didn’t even run to water immediately. It’s probably fine.

Thanks Lydim! Yes he made it. More of an ordeal for me.

Thanks Jenjabba - I wonder why some dogs don't bark, most seem to know if they want inside to bark.

Thanks Rcguenth - he is precious. I always tell him he's the best boy doggy in the world. I previously had 2 girl dogs and don't want to be unloyal to their memories.

I’m glad he’s ok! Seems like a good dog. Don’t be hard on yourself because no one is perfect. Seems like he is well taken care of.

Yes Kat, I'm going to do that, but I did put out a bucket of water. I forget about things all the time. I've left the hose running on my fruit tress for multiple hours before hearing the water running. I ruined new flooring in the master bathroom and closets when I left water running to soak a shirt. Left it running for hours and it cost me about $1000. I'm lucky I have a double sink in the kitchen and when I've left the water running for hours to soak the cat food dishes the water pours into the other sink. I've started writing down the time I give Marco his insulin shots because I was always forgetting if I had done it. I still forget to write it down and can't remember. I've started keeping track of the syringes. I put them in an old olive jar once I use them and then later cut the needles off. Now I try to not have any in the jar at the end of the day.

Thanks Unhealthy Daddy and Daddy M. and Wannabe - I'm just glad it wasn't 100 degrees out and I wouldn't have felt so bad if there was water outside. He was panting like crazy for about 30 minutes after he came in so I don't know why he didn't drink water. So I gave him a little half and half. He loves it and I've read dogs aren't lactose intolerant like cats.

It happens. I'm glad he is ok. I dk how to teach them to bark at door either. Our dog, Sydney doesn't bark or scratch or anything to go out or in. She will go to door and then over to us to get out but just stands by door to get in. Just give him extra loves and kisses 💜💜💜
