Fritzy 22's Journal, 27 February 2023

I go to bed early. I often watch TV for an hour or more before falling asleep. I have to have the TV on in order to sleep. Last night the porch kitty didn't show up for dinner around 5-6pm like she normally does. I kept checking and checking and she wasn't there. Then around 8pm I looked on the porch and saw a really skinny cat standing on the porch looking down the steps. Turned the porch light on and saw it was a skinny little fox! No wonder Kitty hadn't shown up yet. I opened the door and the fox ran off. About 30 minutes later Kitty was laying on her warm blanket waiting for dinner so I fed her. I saw her on blanket again an hour or so after eating. She hasn't been around this morning.

It stopped raining, not sure for how long, but long enough to take Bobby out for a 40 minute or so walk. Felt in the mood to keep going but knew if I went any further there would be either big hills to climb to get back home or creeks to cross and the last time I crossed a creek with water I fell in the mud. So 40 minutes was enough.

Will probably not get to the grocery store until Wednesday morning. I'll need milk and half and half and there is no point going today, it will be gone. And Tuesday it is delivered but always after I shop. And Wednesday the weather is supposed to be better. That's what they say, but the weather forecast isn't always so accurate.

Feeling a little blue today. It's my dad's birthday. He would have been 98. He died in 2016 about a month after his 91st birthday. I would like to go to the cemetery to put flowers on his grave but it's more than an hour drive and I have no idea what the weather is like on the way there, or even what it will be like here in an hour or so. My mom's birthday is March 17th. She died in 1997 at 61. I'll take flowers out to the cemetery for them both as soon as the weather allows.

So cool to have a fox but I guess kitty doesn't think so. My FIL's birthday was March 17 and my dad and step mom's anniversary. My mom died in 1996 at 65. My dad at 87.

Yes, remembering our parents is always a little bittersweet

Thanks Morticia - I've seen foxes on my porch before but not in awhile. I try not to leave food out for the cat, but wait until she shows up. But lately I've been tired so I've left out the half and half for her. Surprised to see another kitty show up to drink the half and half the other night. And now the fox. My dad was 11 years older than my mom. He was a widower for almost 20 years. Probably never expected that. Thanks HCB - I was closer to my dad than I was to my mom, maybe because he was alone for so long after she died.

We used to have foxes where I live, but they all died out due to a series of rabies epidemics. I haven't seen any in the last few years. Be careful, especially of foxes who come out in the daytime and look sickly.

Thanks Diana. It's actually a good day so far because we had really rare snow. The flakes were huge and beautiful falling to the ground.

Thanks Josie. I rarely see the foxes in the day. Once there were 2 drinking out of my pond. I don't go anywhere near them.

Fritzy I think I mentioned before that they sell shelf stable milk, cream. I also keep both powdered whole milk and powdered cream in my emergency supplies and they taste just like the liquid you buy in the store. I use a lot of powdered cream, powdered buttermilk when I make soup, pancakes, cereal etc. I just make up just what I will use in a day or so. And, I always refrigerate the reconstituted product for an hour or so before I use it.

Thanks Kenna. You have mentioned the milk products before. I did buy some evaporated milk in case I need it for the feral cat. Otherwise I can get buy for awhile without milk. I just know the delivery days at the small local market because they run out of things often. I will check out the products you've mentioned though because I do like my coffee and can't drink it black.

Awe. It's nice having another being too care for. I'm sorry for your losses. I understand that pain. Wishing you the best of luck and good health.

Powdered milk is massively processed. I think you’re going about it the right way in buying it fresh, even though it’s been unreliably available during Covid. Like you said, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t have it for a few days.

My dad was a lot older than my step mom. She was only about 10 years older than me.

Thanks Bananas, I have other food I keep for emergencies that aren't fresh for times where I can't or don't want to go to the grocery store. I don't like running out of food so many cans of beans, tuna, and soup just in case.

Thanks Morticia. My mom married my dad when she was 18 and he was 29. Back in the early to mid 50's (and probably before) getting married right out of high school was very common, and marrying older men.

Exactly, Fritzy. Even if fresh milk is unavailable, you still have canned tuna and the beans for protein. When I cook I always make extra to freeze in portion controlled servings, because you never know.

IJustBananas— if you ever have the occasion to be involved in a real disaster where food is for some reason just out of reach, you will be surprised at how fast your concept of whether a processed food is good for you or not. I live in earthquake county and we already have been educated that we must be able to take care of ourselves for at least 3 weeks. Food, water, etc. at some point you have to eat or throw away your emergency supplies to keep them from expiring. I choose to eat them rather than waste them. 30 years of doing it and I’m still alive.

@Kenna: why not donate your soon-to-expire processed food to a food bank or shelter? Or eat it. Whatever. Your diet has zero impact on my life.
