astraea82's Journal, 07 May 2011

So here is the email I sent and the response I got back from fatsecret when I asked about the Red Robin ads. In fact, there is one on my page right now asking "Who makes the most craveable burgers?". Anyway, here it is:

Hi, this message is regarding the Red Robin ads that I keep seeing pop up on the pages that I visit. I understand that the site needs to generate revenue, but in my opinion it is ethically wrong to display tempting food ads to a group of people who are struggling with body image, weight, and possibly self-esteem. The ads for Red Robin are not even showing healthy items but instead concern "craveable hamburgers." I am asking that you request that the sponsor advertise their healthy items (if they even have any). Otherwise, I do not see how a weight-loss website can morally continue to have Red Robin as a sponsor. Thank you.

Hi astraea82

Many thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconvenience.

FatSecret advertisers help keep the site free. While some other websites may charge their members for their tools and services, FatSecret is completely free. This enables us to reach more people and help them achieve their goals.

We sincerely thank you for your understanding about the presence of ads on the site and for your support of our advertisers. We do seek to maintain a high standard for ads so that they provide a complementary experience. While we don't endorse every product or service advertised (like burger cravings...), we strive to block and remove ads that are misleading or offensive, particularly as it relates to food and diet. We welcome members taking the time to report these ads and we'll do our best to remove them.

I was just telling my boyfriend how crazy it is that I keep seeing ads for ice cream bars on a diet website! Glad I'm not the only person who noticed that. Try to think of it this way, life is full of temptations and part of living a healthy life is being able to resist these things, this is just practice for real life (non web) temptation :)

If the adds bother you I suggest that you stop using internet explorer.. Mozilla blocks all adds from every site you visit.

I can't think of a worse ad then one that has the slogan "Burger Craving". I can't believe how they don't understand!!
