sadie_eats's Journal, 03 November 2014

I've decided today is the day to start living healthier. I've heard a lot about this website and am hoping it helps me keep on track.

My diet plan was originally going to be Atkins, but I think I'm going to opt out for my own sort of nutritional change. I'm a little confused as to whether I should pay attention to my calories, or pay attention to my carbs... I have decided, however, to pay attention to my carbs and just keep an eye on my calories. My starter plan is something like this:

-Diet soda only for special occasions (I normally drink it everyday)
-Focus on drinking water all day everyday
-Focus on eating more leafy veggies (ick lol)
-Stay away from white flour and rice! (if this means removing the bun, fine!)
-Avoid or eat very little of starchy veggies (potatoes, corn...)
-Avoid sweets!!
-Have healthy snacks handy ALL the time!
-Try to avoid processed foods...
-Try to be more active! (taking 30+min walks, etc)

I hope this is a good start. It doesn't seem too restrictive, but is a fairly good change from how I normally eat without a care.

Welcome and Good luck. I thought the same thing when I started. My suggestions: (1) divide your plan into three phases/parts, (2) if you are not active now start with 15mins not 30+ mins of walking and (3) give yourself a specific period of time to accomplish each phase of your plan (i.e., 4-6 weeks). It seems like it should be easy but its not. Pace yourself. It gets overwhelming. Again, Good luck.

Welcome! Try taking wheat and/or all grains out of your diet as this made a huge difference for me to stop depressive thoughts and obsessive, impulsive eating. Best wishes... Oh ya, what about watching carbs AND calories and adding healthy fat for success. The only problem with Atkins is that many people try it without near enough fats which makes them fail. Eating fat is like priming the pump to burn fat. It so works!!

I think those are great goals! I do agree with Oxmk28, sometimes trying to accomplish too many changes at once can be a bit overwhelming. At times it helps to try one thing at a time. I think quitting soda (and switching to LOTS of water) really helped me lose weight in the beginning. And, believe it or not, I don't really miss it anymore. Maybe once or twice a month I might get a craving for a soda. It usually passes, or I just go ahead and drink one. At this point, a little cheating here and there is good. :) Welcome! Best of Luck!
