I'm a 25 year old female. I work full-time, and often see my family, so I feel as if I hardly have any time to take care of myself. I also have two medium-size dogs that live in my little apartment with me. Of course they need care and attention as well and they don't care if I get fat lol.

When I graduated college (less than 10 years ago), I weighed about 140 lbs, so I've really let myself go. Honestly I can pinpoint it all down to new stressors in my life, less time, and ongoing anxiety/depression symptoms.

I think it's finally time to lose weight. I really hope I can keep it up and not let my anxiety/depression knock me down!

EDIT: I have decided on a new way of thinking that I've had from the beginning but fully realized after my first week. I want to BE HEALTHY. Losing weight is not my main focus, it's just a positive (and much appreciated) side-effect to BEING HEALTHY.

Counting Carbs or Calories? What works for you?

Ten years ago, I lost 100 pounds on Atkins. My weight crept back up and I found myself at the same starting weight in June. I think I read that this kind of thing happens with 85% of all dieters, regardless of what diet they followed. I started a low carb diet again in late June of this year, and just like before, the weight came off with a maximum of 40 or so net carbs.

My blood glucose and A1C really improved, as well. I am a Type 2 diabetic, so this was important to me. My cholesterol improved, but not much.

I have some good friends who are long term plant eaters (vegan or whole food plant based--you choose the name). I decided to see what that was like . I worried that a sudden increase in carbs would result in a sudden gain, but it didn't happen.

What did happen was that my blood glucose went even lower, so low that I was taken off the rest of my diabetes meds. My blood pressure got lower too, so my BP meds were cut in half. I won't be checking cholesterol until January, but if that goes down, too, it will be the trifecta for me. All this while eating about 5X (4X net)the carbs I was eating when I low carbed. I eat only plant based foods and no added oils. This AM I had a big bowl of steel cut oats, a Tbsp of Chia Seeds, and a heap of blueberries. It works for me.

This is interesting. Good for you!

My only thought is, how do you find enough meal varieties to eat?

Whatever works. I have never thought low carb a good plan. But...I need to cut more processed foods. I think, as your improved numbers show, it is processing that is the enemy in our nutrition, not carbs themselves, but those refined high glycemic carbs.

When most people, myself included, say we're doing 'low carbs' what you're saying is exactly what we're doing, cutting out processed 'simple carbs' Most I know eat only nutritious veggies and fruits and limit their 'treats' to a minimum.

So to say that I never thought low carb is a good plan
is kindof contradictory to your next sentence.

When you are doing CICO, you can eat whatever you want as long as you stay in your RDI. This can lead to a very unhealthy lifestyle. But if you go low carb (eliminate simple carbs) it ultimately leads to a lower calorie intake.

This is some good advice, and after studying the Atkins diet, I can agree.

In low carb diets you are allowed to eat carbs if they come from veggies and some fruits, plus whatever minor extra carbs you get from, like, eggs for example.

The only thing about low carb is that it seems, to me anyway, difficult to maintain. Maybe it's just the daunting aspect of the 1st phase in the Atkins diet (induction), or maybe it's that it's so much easier to eat low calorie (even without eating crap, or very limited crap lol).

I think for me maybe a diet that is in-between would be good... Meaning I would be watching my calories and also limiting my intake of white bread, white flour, white rice, etc...

I count carbs and it's the only way I see results . I'm not a fanatic about it but I eat very little bread . It quite easy to substitute other things for bread- I always have bunless burgers with lots of veggies sitting on a bed of lettuce . I actually prefer it that way . A large green leaf lettuce leaf makes an excellent substitute for a tortilla! I will indulge in chips occasionally but I buy the small individual packs to limit my consumption. I like not feeling so bloated after my meals now...I have to add I don't count complex carbs at all - I eat carrots, bananas and grapes as it's the simple carbs I try to restrict or eliminate.

Different diets work for different people. I could see low carb working for people, like you, if you aren't cutting out just about ALL carbs like the Atkins diet wants you to do (especially at first).

But I do think for any diet it's probably a good idea to limit your simple carbs.

I too did atkins many years ago and lost 30 lbs in 2 months... but found that when I went off the "ranch" one time for a "small" order of french fries (because I was hungry and had not prepared my lunch), the resulting insulin spike, and hormone responses made me feel like a crack addict! I ran right back to the snackbar and ordered an entire basket of fries and a soda, and the wheels came off my Atkins wagon. Truly recommend the common sense, balanced approach to eating. Research Scoobysworkshop.com nutrition section and weight loss section. Then check out his fast calorie calculator under the fitness tools section. I am within 5 lbs or where his tools said I would be when I started in January 2014... and his info is all FREE!

You've been so much help so far CK. I really love your approach to living healthier, it seems so balanced and not rushed and that's what I'm looking for. I know you can attribute much of what you've done to the resources you are offering me, but the fact that you are another living testimonial of that way of life, makes me feel like this would be right for me as well.

I will definitely check out that website.

All in all I am looking to be a much healthier version of me. I'm not looking to lose 10 lbs in two weeks. I want it to slowly come off and stay off, and me actual able to enjoy life and food, just a lot differently and a lot smarter than I was enjoying it before.

Counting Carbs or Calories? What works for you?
This is all such good input and I thank you all for sharing!

Originally I was going to start Atkins because of my mother. The first time she did Atkins she lost a ton of weight. The thing is, it's a huge lifestyle change that lasts forever, and she wasn't able to stick with it for more than a year. Since then, she's been on and off. It works for her, but she can't seem to stay on it and it brings her down. The diet is restrictive and if you eat out like my family does, and enjoy dinners as a family, it can be really difficult to stick with it.

So I'm doing research, and looking for testimonials, not because I'm tallying whether carb counting or calorie counting gets more votes, but just because I'm trying to figure out which would fit my lifestyle better before I get in too deep.
