It's been a good week for me. I slipped up and ate a few bites of one of my husband's snack cake and realized that it was way too sweet. It didn't even taste good & kind of made me feel sick. I also sipped some soda at a friends house the other day & nearly gagged. I guess that's great. I'm almost over my sugar addiction, yay! I still crave it from time to time but I'm getting over that, too.

I've recently discovered that I have an insulin sensitivity that results in my body not processing sugars and carbs very well. Eventually, I will have diabetes unless I stick to low carb and remain as active as possible. I also have Acanthosis Nigricans, a condition that is a result of the insulin problem. This is usually common in obese people and is identified with dark colored skin on the back the neck and can also be on the elbows and knees. I only have the dark color on my neck and it's embarrassing. I always wondered what it was. I thought it was dirt when I was younger & played lots of sports. I recently consulted my physician about it and that's when I was diagnosed. I have to give up sugar & go low carb in order to change this! I really want to be able to wear my hair up in public without hiding it under polo shirts.. yes, this is affecting me dramatically.

Although i'm not considered obese, I am overweight & I really have to do something about it. This is life threatening & I need to realize the severity of it! My grandmother died in her 50's from diabetes. My great-grandmother on the other side died from diabetes at 62. Heart disease also dominates both sides of my family. I want to be healthy! Being thin will just be an added benefit.

I've decided to begin a low carb diet. Either Atkins or South Beach.. I'm researching now to decide which one is best. I'm reluctant to change my diet status because I don't want my weight chart to change. But maybe that will be the motivation to lose more. I'm also working on starting a new challenge for those of us who don't need to lose 50+ lbs.

Here's to new beginnings! :)

I, too, have a family history of diabetes. I applaud you being so courageous and trying to avoid this fate! My advice is to do the South Beach because it is easier to follow long-term. It incorporates good (low-glycemic) carbs rather than cutting them out entirely. Good luck and God bless!

I have it all, diabetes, cancer, heart, its like a nasty cocktail! anyway yes... cheers to getting healthy and thin too! i would worry about atkins because it may not be heart healthy but idk tons of ppl are happy w/ it. a dr did create it too right? just that the bad fat does clog the arterys... ugh no ONE is safe! ;P
