rangamom's Journal, 09 October 2018

So, I lost 36kgs a couple of years ago and found that forums and accountability were the key to keeping on track. Still figuring out how the site works but thought I'd introduce my situation and see if anyone else out there is on a similar path- or wants to help me with a cyber kick up the arse if I fall off the wagon.
I was 108kgs and turning 44 and just decided enough was enough. So made total life overhaul: did half-marathon, dropped from a size 20 to a 10 and literally was unrecognisable.
And then.... sigh, I had a hysterectomy, and going from 2hrs intensive exercise a day to NOTHING was crippling, mentally and physically. I gained some weight (5kgs or so) and got back to the gym, eventually.
Just when momentum was gathering my youngest child (8yrs) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes -all encompassing, 5 needles a day, hasn't spent a night away from me, STRESS. FYI- without insulin, a Type 1 Diabetic has about a week to live. In a sleep deprived state (biggest risk is at 3am when blood sugars drop and diabetics slip into coma, then death -so most parents do a 3am finger prick blood test) I tripped down a flight of concrete steps and removed my front teeth, dislocated wrist and tore the meniscus in both knees. A year on, add 40kgs, can't run or even walk for any distance. Totally fed up I am going to try and do this with pilates, weights and swimming.

Go day by day! You will get there, but dont beat yourself up over it.You have had a lot going on. The main thing is that you have started to do something about it. Losing weight is 80% food.Your menu looks good. I stick to calories,as for me that works well and i still have bread factored into that as i cant go without bread. Goodluck.

Thanks so much for the shout out -doing Keto and calorie limit, totally converted to how evil sugar is when I see the living breathing results of what it did to my Miss 8 and how much it messes with our endocrines. Also know from having the human 'lab rat' how important intermittent fasting is to reset the body. I have learned so much about food metabolism due to her Diabetes.

I had gestational diabetes and my readings were all over the place, even with fruit. My mum has type 2 diabetes,i dont want to get it back,so thats another reason for losing weight and eating healthy.

Oh that's so great to know you have some idea of the extra planning required for being carer of a Type 1 kid! Its a lonely road sometimes.

Everyone here is very supportive:). You’ve done an excellent job when you’ve lost weight so you know you can do it again! So sorry for your little one! My kids have maybe spent 3-4 nights away from me in the last 5 years so I get that part. Pricking at night would almost be like having a child with the flu and having to stay up or get up with them half the night. I feel for you. Returning to the gym and figuring out a diet plan is half the battle. Take it slow and easy, ease back in, and before you know it you’ll be well on your way to being fit and trim!

Don't awful things take over our lives at times. This year for me has been absolutely horrible, beginning with the death of my dad. It all had to happen as this is life but wow, has it taken it's toll on my goals and energy levels. So it is good to start again, isn't it? So I hope you get a good start and commit to it, but do not give up if things get tough along the way. Do not be too hard on yourself. It is a "journey" as they say. You will get there.🌷
