What was your motivation to start your journey here? Mine was medical issues. I was tired of the pills I followed what the doctor said to do and I kept getting bigger and sicker. I'm a shoe addict.
The kicker was when I put on shoes I hadn't worn since last Christmas... I couldn't get my lil flintstone feet into them. had to get a new pair. I went up to an 11.5 (euro 42) I'm in a 9 now and can probably go lower eventually. I'm in it for the new shoes!

Health, for sure: My A1c went high / abnormal, so I knew it was time to find out how to treat T2D with diet.

Getting compared to an unattractive overweight comedian, twice, by two different people. Then looking in the mirror and realizing "Holy crap, they're right! What have I become?"

A few months after I gave birth, an aunt came to visit..and she just looked at me and said, "Oh! Pregnancy! Too bad. See how big you are. Its too bad." I was pissed that day because I thought I looked fine. But then I had to face it...she was right. After I lost 10 lbs, she saw me again and smiled and said, "Yes! Thats how you should look!" I was proud of that. And Ive lost another 30lbs since then. Wonder what she'd say now :)

I love you shoe motivation. I started because I was mortified by what the scale said and the pictures revealed. The reason I stay is because I am healthier now then I was in my 20s also because my pancreas is a quitter and I have a serious aversion to dying.

My motives: Stopping the relentless march of diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis with all their pain, meds, and ugly prognoses, and to look better.

Started BP meds. And scared of old age and what I've seen it do to some of those around me. And I've seen others who have thrived through the years. I want to be like the ones who thrive.

I gained too much for my frame during my first and unique pregnancy. So motives 1) the scale number after the birth 2) my thighs burning while walking (and I love walking) 3) old clothes I couldn’t wear anymore and it annoyed me to change my wardrobe 4) all that nasty cellulitis that I never had before 5) extensive unaesthetic belly fat that made me feel insecure.

Motivation: My kids! Now in my thirties, I am realizing that what I do now will determine my longevity and mobility. I wanna live to see my grandkids and great grandkids, and great great grandkids and not be wheelchair bound! Good luck to everyone!

My husband of 26 years was my motivation. Without a single complaint about his overweight wife, he led the way by changing himself. Over several years he lost 35 pounds and became as fit and healthy as when in his early 20's. It was such a mental thing for me... I had to stop being bitter that he had never tried all that hard to be fit or eat well, while at the same time I struggled constantly with weight gain through pregnancies and being so busy. I was the one always trying in the past yet was not doing well presently. When I finally got my act together, I gave it my all and have surpassed his weight loss. We are both the most fit and strong we have been in a couple decades. We work out and walk together and eat well together and hope to grow old while staying fit and strong... Together.

@Melissa..what was the actual turning point for you that made you "get your act together"?

Aboutmytribe, I don't think it was a single thing or at a single time. There was a slow yet steady growing dissatisfaction with myself. I knew something had to change... A new year was as good as any other time to finally get really serious. My hubby's support, walking, and y'all have kept me going... I am so incredibly motivated to keep healthy now (as much as it depends upon me) and I have confidence for the first time in forever that I can.

Thanks Melissa! I am trying to determine the "point of pain" to help, as you put it - "persuade without pushing" someone I know.

Melissa - for me it was my husband as well. We both enjoy the outdoors. He's 8 years older than me, and I was always concerned that by the time I retired, his physical ability would be declining and we wouldn't be able to do the things we love. I needn't have worried. He retired early, lost 30 pounds, and exercises like crazy - roller blading, mountain biking, cross-country skiing. I'm now concerned that if I don't get into better shape, I'll be the one holding us back physically

@writingwyoming, that is great! I too have been amazed at the change in activity level and fitness after all these years in my husband. From occasional walker to totally fit and muscular?? How did that happen and, like you said, you don't want to be the one holding back the adventures!
