I think FS must be overestimating my burns...
Hi all

I've been logging all food and exercise pretty obsessively for the past few weeks and I just can't believe I'm burning as many calories as FS says that I am.

Typically I work at a desk 8 hours each weekday, do ten minutes (ok, sometimes five!) a day of push-ups, sit-ups etc, and climb stairs (17 floors twice a day) for ten minutes. I walk about 10 minutes to work morning and evening, at a moderate pace.

That all comes out at around 4000 calories burned a day according to FS. I'm around 280 lbs. Does that sound right? I'm eating around 2000 a day (although yesterday was a bit more!) which is up from a long time of about 1200 (which left me feeling terrible, and after other member's advice, I've increased it).

What do you think? Am I really getting that big a deficit even on 2000 calories a day? Or am I doing something totally wrong?

Thanks

Matt

These guys were on a 1560 calorie diet for 24 weeks, and it messed them up!

Whoa! that article says...

"There were extreme reactions to the psychological effects during the experiment including self-mutilation (one subject amputated three fingers of his hand with an axe"

Looks like I'd better eat some more! I'll work to 1800 and see how that goes. I desperately want to get under 20st (280lbs) for my next weigh-in on Saturday, and once I'm there, that will be a big pyschological barrier and I'll do it a bit more gradually after that.

Thanks for all your replies, keep them coming!

cheers

Hi! How am I doing?
Hi all

I've just joined the site this morning after finding the iphone app last night.

I've been actively dieting for about two months now. I work away from home as an IT contractor and three months ago I hopped on a weighing machine at a train station and was utterly shocked (well, I knew I was fat, but not HOW fat!) when it spat out "23st 6lb" (I think in stone and pounds but I don't know what sounds worse, that or 328 lbs...

That hit me pretty hard and I immediately started restricting intake and trying to add some daily exercise. To give you some context, I'm 35, 5'9", and although I've obviously got loads of wobbly bits, I've always maintained quite good upper body strength. When I was a lot younger I played a lot of rugby and although I've always been the obvious prop-forward shape (!) I did used to be quite fit... but that was 15 years ago!

So, I wanted to lose the weight and get fit again... I've been aiming for around 1200 calories a day and started each day with a quick routine of 10 press-ups, 15 sit-ups, and another 10 press-ups. I've been out for a jog a couple of times but it didn't work out that well!

I weighed in for the first time since I started a couple of days ago and found that I've dropped to 20st 2 (282lbs) which I'm incredibly pleased with after only two months!

My wife is worried that I'm not eating enough, and I was shocked when the app said I should be taking in closer to 2000. I am always incredibly hungry and I'm generally having one basic meal at lunchtime only, and drinking loads of water. I've extended my daily routine to include planks either side (10 seconds is all I can hold) and as well as the weight loss I'm starting to see some definition to my abs which is making me feel great.

My biggest fear is not keeping this up and slipping back, putting all the weight and more back on. I know I need to make permanent lifestyle changes but I don't know if I'm going about it the right way.

Any advice is really welcome.

And it's nice to meet you all!

thanks

Matt
