(Updated September 2017.)

I'm 63, married, female, British, and early-retired. I was overweight and struggled to keep weight down for most of my life, and I got flat feet and bad knees, probably largely due to the overweight. Then I joined FS in 2015....

I had been 'maintaining' at about 12 stones (168lbs, 76.5kg) for about 10 years, but then after a holiday in the USA, I found I'd put on another 10 lbs, getting up from a comfy chair was hard work, and my big belly was starting to make it difficult to tie my shoe laces! So I thought: 'time to act'.

I started on FS in June 2015, when my weight was 178lbs (12st 10lbs, or 80.7kg). I just planned to lose as much as I could over the summer, but then due to joining challenges and meeting supportive buddies on the site, I realised that at last I had found the motivation I needed to continue long-term and get down to a healthy weight.

After 2 years: about 42 pounds lost (3 stones/19kg), dropped three clothing sizes, and about 7-8 inches off my waist. Also, tons more energy gained, and I now go walking regularly, and find stairs and standing easier. Also, met a lot of wonderful people through this site, who give me loads of support, motivation, inspiration, laughs and a dazzling array of information! Thanks, all!

I lost weight by counting calories and in stages, as that fitted in better with my life. Also did a modified version of 5:2 for a while to speed up the rate of loss. I'm now at a healthy weight that I'm happy with (Sept 2017). There will be no going back!

Update January 2018: I finally got to a weight this month that I'm truly happy with, at 132/133lbs, and no plans to lose any more 😀 Still using FS when needed to help me maintain, though!

September 2023: still using this site to help maintain!

Dr. Pepper
From what I've read, both overweight and frequent blood-sugar spikes contribute to causing insulin resistance, resulting in type 2 diabetes. I guess some individuals are more likely to develop insulin resistance than others due to hereditary or other factors.

None of this is really answering the original question about vanilla extract!

@mgussmann - might there have been other another reason why your blood sugar was up? If not, maybe you could try testing yourself before and after a drink without vanilla, and another time before and after a drink with vanilla? Or just give up on the vanilla? I've heard that some flavoured coffees, including vanilla, are extremely high in sugar.

Dr. Pepper
I'm not sure that it has been proven that sweeteners have any effect. As I understand it, there was one study on a small number of individuals, but I think the results have not been verified by repeating the trial elsewhere with more people. The press are quick to publish results like that, but that doesn't mean it's true. Unless anyone knows of further trials?

Age issues
I'm 61. I used to think I had a slow metabolism. Now realise that we just tend to get less active as we get older, then we put on weight, which slows us down even more. It's a vicious circle. I now walk or cycle for 30-60 minutes every day, but still find I have to limit calories to about 1100-1200 per day to lose about a pound a week. I've started doing 5:2 fasting, which seems to suit me, but doesn't suit everyone. The main benefit I find is that I can eat more some days and make up for it by eating less on others, to give an average of about 1150 cals per day. I'm averaging losing just over a pound a week. It's going to take a while, but I know I will get there in the end! Good luck to you, and hope this helps! Oh, one other thing. I aim to get about 50% of calories from carbs, don't think it matters much when I eat them. It IS important however to LOG every little thing you eat and drink, every day, otherwise it's easy to let the calories creep up without realising. And yes, fruit does contain a lot of sugar, it's healthy sugar, but you can still have too much because of the calories. Nuts are very calorific, due to all the fat in them, so be very sparing with those.

It's NOT a Diet
Well done Velvetice, you're doing and thinking all the right things 😀 I am intrigued, SiGGy, by the idea of one day a week of eating what you like. Someone else has suggested that to me too. I've only been doing this for two months, so not going to try it yet, however it is something to bear in mind for the future. I wonder though, on the days when you 'eat everything', do you not find that you are still making different choices than you would have before?

Is the calorie counter right?
Not too far out for me, although I had to put that I was sedentary to get it right. It came out at 1400, and I would lose weight very slowly at that, but am mostly trying to do about 90% of RDI to lose a bit quicker. Careful not to go to low though, when you don't eat enough, body just slows down and burns fewer calories! You could make yourself ill, too, if you don't eat enough.
