Goal Weight:178.0 lb
following: cmp9969's own diet
performance: losing 3.0 lb a week

I am a 40 year old male with a hypothyroid problem. This is the largest I have been in my life and a far cry from 145 out of Marine Corps boot camp. 145 is too thin on a 6'1" guy. My goal weight is 178. That was the weight I felt best at. In addition to losing the weight, I will be trying to get back into Marine Corps form.

Need a good electronic food scale recommendation
There is a Biggest Loser scale that has the tare, the digital read out, multiple measurements and it has the nutritional information for like 900 foods.

Gaining weight while eating 1500 calories a day
One thing to remember is that with your workout regimen, you could be adding muscle mass. Your BMI right now is 18.6, barely above underweight (below 18.5). I would keep your calories and maybe increase them a little and maintain your workout routine. Try to get to a BMI of 19 at least (107 pounds for your height). Remeber muscle weighs more than fat and the better muscles you have, the better fat burning you will have. Metabolism does start to slow in your 20's (feels like it stops in your 30's).

I NEED to stop drinking soda in great quantities. It would save so many calories for the good food.
