Controversial Topic: What Causes Obesity?
Wow! This conversation has been very interesting. Thanks, k8yk for starting it and making us all think. Weight gain most certainly comes from "more calories in than out" idea. I have been thinking a lot in the last 3 months about "why" i eat.
To start with i have to think that I am getting something out of being over weight. We all want good things for ourselves. we don't want bad things, so then I must be getting something good out of being fat. I know that sounds a bit "out there" but what is it that my inner self is trying to give my by being overweight. There has to be a gift. So in order to lose weight, I feel that i need to find out what gift my inner self is trying to give me.
I feel that i over eat for a number of reasons. 1. lonely 2. boredom 3. to protect myself from sexual advances. So when i eat, when i am loney, for instance, i feel comforted, therefore less lonely, therefore peace, therefore happy. Does that make sense?
I was ranch raised too and raised my kids on one. There is so much to do and that probably is why i don't weight MORE! But my kids did not sit in front of a TV for endless hours and play video games. There was work to do. Thankfully, they are in great shape and healthy. But the rich ranch food is so available and then the metabolism slows down. i need to learn to match my food with my hunger, period.
Oh, and also, i think we, as dieters have been taught that hunger is a bad thing, maybe even to be feared. "Go on "this" diet and never be hungry!" Hunger is just a feeling, telling my body that sometime in the near future i will get to eat. Something to look forward to. Hunger is just a feeling, I don't need to panic and lose control. I may even cultivate my hunger just a bit so that i know that when i eat, i will enjoy it. I also need to feel in control enough that i will stop eating when i am full. It is quite a cycle. Hope someday i get it all down pat.
