Digital or really scale?
A good digital scale will be more exact over the life of the scale. Springs can wear out, fluctuate with weather, warp, or just be inaccurate.

That said, it depends on what you are tracking. If you want a general idea of your weight, a spring scale is just fine. If you are tracking exact poundage or even half pounds... obviously go digital.

p90x vs. insanity
I finished Insanity and am currently doing P90X. They are both hard in their own right. That being said, Insanity is the more advanced and much harder routine. It does take some fitness level to complete. If you have worked out before (like you say you have) you should be fine doing Insanity.

Insanity will slim you down, build your cardio and endurance and tighten you up. P90X builds strength and adds muscle (and bulk if you are trying for that)

I would suggest using the "enter exercise" function and put in your average nights sleep and the remaining time as rest. This will give you a base line for calories burned. Then subtract 100-200 a day and this will give you some leeway for a larger meal or a day where you splurge a little.

Of course, there are some other factors involved... if you know there is an activity you do on a daily basis, calculate that in as well.

eating before or after exercising...
K8yk absolutely has it right.

I used to do cardio and lifting after dinner, I would try to limit the meal size so I wouldn't feel as full while at the gym. I recently started working out first thing in the morning. It is a rather intense Cardio routine and I found that some days I had zero energy. I started eating a banana about a half hour before and my energy is there everyday.

After the workout, like K8yk said, you absolutely NEED protein. You want to get a large dose of protein within a half an hour of finishing. Like K8yk said, you are not building muscle while working out... you are actually tearing it. Think of it like a volcano. As it breaks apart, lava creates more rock and the volcano gets bigger. Well you are doing the same thing to your muscles. You tear them and when they heal, more muscle fills in the tears. Since I am now working out in the morning, I make a whey protein shake with 8oz of 1% milk. It comes out to about 320 calories and provides 46g of protein, it is essentially my breakfast.

Many workout programs will tell you to eat something light before a workout and carb up. It helps you get through the workout.

So bottom line the answer is to eat before and after. Have a light meal that is more carb heavy before working out and then a high protein meal afterwards.
