Somewhat higher calorie count today thanks to breakfast out with a friend. We went to a place with no available fruit, which is a little odd this time of year, so I indulged in a bowl of oatmeal with my omelet and skipped the toast and potatoes. Usually I do omelet and berries or melon, but no such luck today. Because I had oatmeal at breakfast, I skipped grain at dinner and had roasted carrots and -- drumroll please -- one-half cup of oven roasted broccoli. I have not eaten broccoli in 3 years. I have been really anxious to find out if I could tolerate a small portion of broccoli or cauliflower, so as to relieve my growing veggie boredom problem. So I got a small container of broccoli florets all cut and washed, and roasted it up with olive oil and seasoned sea salt. I measured out a portion for myself and sent the rest home with my downstairs neighbor so I wouldn't be tempted to eat anymore until I've gone through a few days and know whether I was able to digest it. If I can, next week I'll try out cauliflower. If this works out, then I can do it once a week. The Whole Foods salad bar always has broccoli and cauliflower, so I could buy just a servings worth and not waste anything. I can't believe I'm getting so excited about cruciferous vegetables!

Doing OK today... didn't have to take any meds at all, and while I'm not quite back to what passes for normal, I'm pretty close. I'm determined to stick very close to plan for the next 3 weeks so I can get back on the scale with some measure of confidence that a 7-day vacation did not completely throw me off. In three weeks, my family comes from France, and then my sister comes from DC a couple weeks later, so I know we will be carousing, and I have to be really firmly on the plan before all that house-guesting starts. I am trying to be more creative about veggies and fruit. I got so darned tired of green beans, so I'm still bound and determined to try small portions of broccoli and cauliflower to see if I can get away with it, just to stave off boredom. If there's anyone out there who is eating low FODMAP with veggie suggestions, please let me know what you're doing to not get bored and also to maintain proper nutrition.

I'm back and recovering from terrible errors in judgment while on vacation! Saturday night, I ate half an eclair...and then Sunday at brunch, I ate tastes of multiple desserts. I guess I figured once I'd eaten the eclair, I might as well go all in. Of course I was very sick by Sunday night, so I had to take Immodium for three days straight and be very very careful not to eat anything else likely to make me sick. I guess I needed to get a wonderful dessert out of my system! Today, I've managed to get along with just a Gas-X, so I'm thinking by tomorrow I'll be OK, so long as I don't do anything else really stupid. I have to admit though, that eclair was really, really good. For some reason, Baltimore is home to magnificent custard eclairs -- part of their Italian tradition, I guess. Overall, while I ate more than I normally would, other than Saturday dessert and Sunday dessert, I did pretty well. I was careful not to eat any bread or pasta, no cream sauces or fresh cheeses or anything thickened with regular flour. I stuck with seafood and salads. I carried my buckwheat crispbreads into restaurants so I wouldn't be tempted to eat bread, so it wasn't so bad. And I don't think I will be tempted to eat anything crazy for at least a few weeks! I am craving ice cream from watching everyone around me eat gelato for 5 days, so I think maybe I will try to to make some ice cream this coming week -- probably coffee. Now, I have to get back to my routine. No weigh in until August 1. I refuse to torture myself.

Had a much better experience with zucchini noodles. The first time I tried them, I made them myself on a sprializer, and tried them with a fairly light sauce -- butter and garlic with shrimp -- and we all thought they were disgusting. For one thing, I just wasn't convinced that shrimp on a bed of zucchini was anything at all like having pasta. But I was willing to try again: This time, I bought the zucchini spirals from Veggie Noodle Co. and followed the directions to sautee them in a little olive oil with season salt. And I used them with my chicken chorizo sauce -- a heavy sauce that really coated the "noodles" so that it wasn't like having, well, zucchini. I was happy enough with the outcome that now I'm going to try to do pesto and shrimp. But I'm suspicious that the keys are first -- sauteeing the zucchini just to al dente texture and using a heavy tomato sauce that totally coats the zucchini. Then you have this noodly texture with sauce that is much more like spaghetti with meat sauce than it is zucchini with tomatoes. I'm open to any suggestions anyone has who's had more experience than I have with this food. I really do like the idea of being able to have "spaghetti" and meat sauce without having to skip carbs for 3 days.
