I am a grandmother of six, mother of two, share my home with a 12 year old Rat Terrier named Chico. I have been a practicing Buddhism in the Tibetan tradition for almost 30 years. I still work full time in the insurance business and my passions are meditating, painting (www.furfriendsportraits.com),... animal rescue.

I have been starting and stopping diets for about 20 years and at one point was a size 18, am now a size 14 and have determined to be a size 10 by Christmas 2013!

The low carb diet is the one where I feel the best mentally, emotionally and physically and I have to stay creative in order to satisfy my 'sugar addiction' without actually eating sugar.

My mom was a diabetic from age 55 onward, on insulin and my Dad had late onset diabetes so I really must pay attention to my genetics!

Goal #1: 172 by Feb 1 (missed by a bit: 174.6)
Goal #2: 168 by Mar 1 (nope. 176. switching to weight watchers I think)

EDIT: Had Saddle/Pulmonary Embolism 3/16/13. All doctors say I should be dead. Changing to DASH diet April 16 so I can control this new hypertension with diet and exercise.

NEW Goal #1: Be off hypertension meds by May 15, 2013 with DASH diet and excercise. SUCCESSFUL!
Goal #2: Return to work by June 1. SUCCESSFUL! BACK AT WORK!
Goal #3: Lose 2-4 lbs/month. (SLOWLY BUT SURELY.....)
Goal #4: Live to see my 65th birthday in September. (SUCCESSFUL!)
Goal #5: Give thanks every day for having another day. Take care of this "Precious human rebirth" as it says in Buddha's teachings.

Calling all sugar addicts!
Read the newest Dr. Atkins book to understand sugar's effects on your system and why eating it (in all its forms) produces more craving for it. It's called insulin imbalance. That's why diets like the Zone or Mediterranean or Atkins restrict carbs - all turn to sugar quickly (potatoes, white rice included) and balance with proteins to slow down the process. When I go on Atkins Induction for two weeks, by day 5 all sugar cravings are GONE. And I'm a sugarholic! And yes, Atkins recommends limiting sugar subs as well per daily intake.
