All foods are healthy,
No food is Healthy,
Food is nutritious. :)
PEOPLE are healthy, or not...

Is [this food] healthy?
Craig Good
There is a depressing number of questions on Quora of the form "Is [this food] healthy?" or "How healthy is [this food]?" or even "Is [this food] fattening?"

It's the wrong question.

All food is healthy.

Let me repeat that. All food is healthy. That's why it's called food. Any food can be part of a healthy diet.

Not all diets are healthy. What you eat today doesn't matter. What you eat this month does. A healthy diet is one with a wide variety of foods, mostly plants, not too much or too little. (It should be obvious that if you have been diagnosed by a medical doctor with an allergy or sensitivity to a certain food or ingredient that you'll want to avoid it. I'm talking about the general case here.)

It may be worth pointing out that, technically, what I just said is wrong. The truth is that no food is healthy. That's because people can be healthy, but food can only be nutritious. But enough people abuse the word "healthy" in this context that I just went along.

Beware of all claims such as:

This is the One True Diet
You must avoid this food
You must eat this superfood
This food is a silent killer
This food will boost your immune system
This food will make your brain work better
This food is fattening
This food will help you lose weight
This food is healthy
This food is junk
Processed foods are dangerous
"Organic" is better
GMO foods are dangerous
Those are all wrong. As in false. Unsupported by science. Anybody making these claims is selling something.

There is no nutrient that you absolutely need to consume every day. Your body evolved in scarcity and is perfectly capable of dealing with nutrients coming in at varying rates. It's the overall diet that matters, not the individual food, meal, or even day.

Anti-GMO activism is anti-science scaremongering, largely funded by the "Organic" food industry ( See How 'Organic' Agriculture Evolved From Marketing Tool To Evil Empire ) Compare it to The International Scientific Consensus On Genetically Engineered Food Safety.

In case you're up in arms about organic, take the time to read Mythbusting 101: Organic Farming > Conventional Agriculture. Also, if you're worried about pesticides, see Richard Muller's answer to What are some mind-blowing facts about food? Also Think organic food is better for you, animals, and the planet? Think again.

Food fads almost all result from fallacies, usually including

Fear of modernity
Appeal to antiquity
The Naturalistic Fallacy (ie: "Natural" is better)
Religious superstition
The above explain fads like the MSG scare, gluten free, Paleo, "organic", and the demonization of salt. If you want detailed information I highly, highly recommend reading The Gluten Lie: And Other Myths About What You Eat: Alan Levinovitz.

On the subject of the gluten free fad, this astonishingly good CBC show nails it:

New information in the form of a single study indicate that Non Celiac Wheat Sensitivity may be a real thing[1] . Note that the mechanism is unknown, and that it’s wheat, not gluten.

Superfoods do not exist. There is no nutritional advantage to "organic" food (though it is, on average, about two times more expensive.) GMO foods are safe. If your diet has a name it's probably bogus.

Speaking of diets, if you are on a diet to lose weight just stop. Diets don't work. If you find that assertion shocking please read Secrets From the Eating Lab: The Science of Weight Loss, the Myth of Willpower, and Why You Should Never Diet Again 1, Traci Mann PhD. The short form is, you need to change your relationship to food, not try to starve yourself to a healthy weight. And you might be surprised what a healthy weight actually is.

There is no metric for healthy. You can use a scale to weigh food and answer the question "Which of these dishes weighs more?" There is no measurement you can make to answer "Which of these dishes is healthier?"

It's the wrong question.

Want to actually eat healthy? Relax and enjoy your food. Stressing about diet is itself a health risk. Obsessing over food can lead to life-threatening eating disorders. Indeed, Orthorexia nervosa seems to be our national eating disorder. You're much better off cultivating a healthy relationship to food.

James Kenji Lopez-Alt's answer to How would you describe your philosophy on cooking and food? describes that healthy relationship well. Read it.

Eat your veggies first. Savor your food. Eat food worth savoring. When someone tries to frighten you about food, ignore them. If there is anything in your diet that you are truly afraid to eat, see a doctor right away. You may have already developed an eating disorder. There is help available. Get it.

If you, or a member of your family, has been diagnosed with an eating disorder and are looking for support, there are resources and a few podcast episodes at Recovery Dad & Recovery Girl which may prove helpful.
