Selbygirl6's Journal, 14 January 2017

Yesterday was full of those moments where you say, "Oh, F**K Me!" and it started with my morning weigh in. I'm back to weighing in every day since the 1st because I also started my training regime. This year, I decided, would be the year that I hike the Grand Canyon. I've been adding bigger and bigger hikes in each week, plus yoga, plus the gym and feeling great with my progress. My weight has stayed the same. I was getting 219 pretty much every day (1 day I was 217 and 1 day I was 220) but it's just been 219 this month. I was feeling depressed and frustrated, trying to figure out why, why, why? After weighing in yesterday, 219.2 btw, I began to look at things I've been doing that have made me plateau. While I was logging my weight on my flow chart I realized I was running late for the gym. I turned the page to my training schedule flow chart and BOOM! There it was looking me straight in the eyes: EXERCISE! Of course I'm plateauing because I've been exercising every day. How can I expect to lose weight and build muscle at the same time? I KNOW this people. I've been losing weight my whole life and I should know the physics by now but apparently I thought I could have my cake and lose it, too. So I had to decide which thing was more important: hike the Canyon or take off 50 lbs. I decided to ditch the training schedule for no so I skipped the gym yesterday entirely. I can always change my Canyon hiking date to October (not early May as I had hoped) and by then I'll be down closer to my goal. So no exercise yesterday (plus a cold shower) got me down 2 lbs today.
217.2 lb Lost so far: 20.8 lb.    Still to go: 29.2 lb.    Diet followed 100%.
losing 6.3 lb a week

I have exercised thru-out my journey. I know some don't. But it makes me feel so much better....I truly believe weight loss begins in the kitchen....Good Luck!

Your body does need rest days.

Losing weight and building muscle at the same time is tricky and difficult. a fitness athelete trick is to limit carbs to days you work out, sort of "earn your carbs" mantra. If you are having a little too much inflammation and cortisol from working out, I would suggest, just working out with wieghts twice a week (or yoga or one of each), on other days..walk, and focus on your diet. Maybe a teeny extra protein on your evening meal after workout.. I don't consider walking with a slighty elevated heart rate of like 100-120 bpm as being a trigger for cortisol, plus you can burn a teeny bit of calories and keep your joints moving. I am focusing on diet (losing weight), but I lift weights 2 times per week. lifting when you have been dieting is sort of..bleh.. you feel weak and un motiviated..but later in the week you feel fine and might notice a little muscle. I am trying not to do a bunch of cardio (one day per week for me), other than that I walk. I am a bike rider and I know a bunch of bike riders and the fat ones9like me) never lose weight biking hard 3 times or more a week. good luck, take a rest or adjust, but don't stop, just lighten your load and keep on trucking. good luck!
