Funny thing, once I cut way back on exercise and ate more, the weight came off

Sugar, I think there is truth to this. Especially weight lifting!

Sometimes it's fat converting to muscle and muscle just weighs more. All pounds are not equal.

I agree!

A few days ago CatHerder posted on something called NEAT (NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis. It's the amount of energy your body uses for day to day activities outside of basic bodily functioning, planned exercise and food digestion.) This is kinda what I've been aiming for and not knowing it had a name! Just adding some extra movements to regular day-to-day activities.

Ari Whitten talks about NEAT in his blogs. Been following him for a while

You guys do realize that NEAT is just another way of saying "Basal metabolic rate". In simpler terms, the amount of calories you burn doing absolutely nothing but living. Let me drop some Strong man knowledge on you guys. Say your BMR is 2000. and you have 20% Body fat. and 80% Lean body mass. That means, if you eat 2000 calories +/- 200 a day then you will MAINTAIN your body weight. And as a general rule, For EVERY pound of lean muscle you have on your body you will burn about 7 to 10 calories more. (Remember, this is RESTING rate.) Now, lets say that you add 10 pounds of lean mass over some time. That is 70 to 100 EXTRA calories a day you will burn off at rest. Those numbers add up. ESPECIALLY when you take into consideration all the processes the body has to activate to PRODUCE that muscle in the first place. And compound that with USING those new muscle fibers to do what ever it is you do for exercise. That's Even MORE calorie burn.(OUTSIDE of your BMR.) And if you lose a few pounds of muscle due to NOT weight training then SO WHAT. 10 pounds of lean muscle burns off in 1 day of just resting the equivalent to 1 table spoon of butter. And if you don't NEED to be big and strong, then what's the point right? What I do for a living REQUIRES me to be big strong and intimidating. Which is why I try to maintain a lot of muscle mass. My problem, is my job also requires me to sit in one spot for 8 to 14 hours a day. So I have a VERY large amount of muscle mass that is only just keeping the pilot light lit. But, if I don't use it, like I didn't for the last 3 weeks, you WILL lose it. Another issue. I started heavy weight training again. And in 2 days, I gained a pound of mass back that ISNT fat. But the scale does not know that. I have stayed 354.7 for 3 days now. the body adds muscle as fast as it burns fat. And I know for a FACT I have changed NOTHING in my diet. OR the amount of water I drink. So don't look down on weight lifting. Take it from someone who is HIGHLY experienced in it. And feel free to ask me or any of the other lifters if you have questions. The biggest calorie burners are your BRAIN, liver, kidneys, intestines, and heart.

Yes, I saw a video today from Quantum University and it was mentioned that the brain uses 25% of our daily calories. I am all for strength training :)

I think I may have read the entry a bit differently. I'm thinking BMR is what is burned just staying alive. NEAT is activity that is not exercise related. For my purposes it's really all semantics anyway ;-)

I get what you are saying, KTMM, but and its a very big but here, you can't logically go through life and continue to carry the weight you are carrying and be healthy. I am saying this with compassion in my heart. The doctor will freak out at your weight. I was told at 285 to lose weight or risk heart problems or diabetes, and I knew he wasn't lying because I saw my blood sugar readings creeping up. I understand you want to be big and strong. Having played football I saw lots of guys like you. The ones that cared about their lives, dropped the weight after their playing days. I understand it's nice to be big, now that I have dropped weight, I look different now, but that's the sacrifice. I really want to be around, and now I have the first sign of cancer. Do yourself a big favor, get serious not about the lifting, but about the weight loss. We both want to be around. I actually am serious about helping people here. It is really why I stay, and everyone here gives back. It is a super group of people.

There's a lot about the "exercise fallacy" in Gary Taubes's book "Why We Get Fat", too. Of course, exercise still has many other critical benefits, so weight loss shouldn't be the only consideration. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!

Believe me, I feel exercise is extremely important. Me posting this was food, pardon the pun, for thought.

Warrenwinter. Don't worry about me my friend. My Lean body mass is 225 pounds. That means If I had Absolutely 0% body fat, I would STILL weigh 225 pounds. At 0% body fat, I would STILL be heavier than a lot of the people here that are at 40% or MORE body fat. Am I unhealthy? Nope. Do I have some health issues? yeah a little. A little gout from the uric acid my body is producing. And I have a mild heart beat misfire. And a lung infection from smoking for 21 years. That's it. No diabetes, no high blood pressure. No clogged vascular system. Just Fat. I do appreciate the concern though. And I really do appreciate the compassion. Thank you. You are right though. I should not be worrying about maintaining the muscle mass. I should be focusing on getting Lean. I guess skinny guys live longer. I can keep my heart strong by just walking. So what if I cant flip a car over anymore. I'm FREAKING 40. WTF do i need to prove now. I have proved everything I needed to prove in my 30's and 40's. Now I just want to make it to 70, like my dad has. He didn't know what I know though. He had the triple bypass and the whole shebang. Thank you all.
