I am wondering - if a person who is size 9 and under regularily eats only about 1000 calories. If a model regularily eats 700 calories. And they are healthy and live long lives, have kids etc. Why is it determined that we must eat 1400 calories? And, why are we told to eat 'energy units' - why is no one saying that it is more important to eat a specific amount of protien/carbs/fat/vitimines instead of just randomly telling people that if they eat 1400 calories then they are healthy. It is illogical.

Models who eat 700 cals a day are not healthy! These women are considered anorexic and die slow deaths at a young age. The healthy ones are those that consume much greater calories quantities but work out to great lengths to keep their figures. Research Heidi Klum compared to Kate Moss. Heidi Klum is the epidemy of health, whereas Kate Moss is living on the verge of death.

It is. I live by the motto...when you are hungry. If its over 1400 so be it! Its about how you feel. Of course overdoing it is not recommended.

Suzzane, I posted before finishing. I understand the points you are making regarding nutritional units and so forth, but you are confusing this with Atkins. No one is saying you must follow Atkins or low calorie, or whatever. I am happy to see you are looking at all of your options. If you wish to decrease your cals and watch your carbs, that is fine. No one should be telling you otherwise. BUT.... this is not Atkins. We will support you and be there for you regardless, but it still doesn't make it Atkins.

Each person's caloric needs differ from another. It's based on many factors. A person who consumes 1400 calories has a better chance of reaching their daily nutritional needs than someone who eats 700 or 1000 a day. Of course, you could eat a bunch of crap for 1400 and a healthy 1000 calories. I don't think there is a clear cut answer. But there is no way you can be healthy continuously eating 700 a day (for an indefinite amount of time). But look at this way, if you can 1400 a day and lose or 700 a day and lose, which is better. The 1400 calories will help you sustain the loss for a long time. The 700 will make you so hungry, you may end up binging. It's all about find a healthy way to lose that can help you keep it off and lead a long healthy life.

Your body thinks you are starving when you eat too few calories. So you may be losing weight, but you are definitely losing it the wrong way.

I agree, and just read this great blog, it makes a lot of sense. And, P.S. If you check out atkins, you are suppose to try for a specific percentage of fat/carbs/and protein, cant look it up right now but I think is is something like 60 - 70% fat, 20- 30% protein, and 5 - 10% carb. RubyEm could tell you for sure, but I would have to go back and find it. try reading this http://whyguys.wordpress.com/2010/04/15/why-do-stalls-happen-what-i%e2%80%99ve-learned/
