Being a diabetic, I decided to try full blown vegan as of July 22nd. Was fully vegan for over three months. 100% committed as my kids and wife are vegan so the transition was easy. Unfortunately, had to revert to animal protein because my A1C was just not any where near where it should be. I am very data driven and had zero issues with sticking to a vegan lifestyle which included eating the highest amounts of plant based proteins, nuts, grains and legumes etc.

After only three days of high protein low carb, my morning numbers are finally coming down. It's a bummer that I had to go back to animal protein but I am thankful to God, that my numbers are stabilizing.

After 8 mos. Of being stable I will try to ease back into the vegan life. Has anyone else had these issues while trying to go vegan while also being a diabetic?

Thanks all, good night :)

Hi there. I am not diabetic, didn't even know what A1C is, but after a little bit of reading I couldn't see the connection between A1C and protein? Have you tried seitan or tofu?

Why don't you try being a vegetarian?

A1C will give you a number that can be equated to a 3 month average of glucose in your blood stream. When I was vegan, my numbers were stagnant and not dropping because I was being a good vegan and eating only natural veggies, some frozen veggies, all kinds of nuts, several types of beans (whole and canned) and some fruits. I was also eating stuff like Loma Linda canned plant based protein meals but all of that stuff is fairly high on the carbs. Carbs turn into sugar. So, I think that since my numbers had been bad for about a year and half, my body was not able to produce enough insulin to metabolize all of that sugar. Animal protein makes much better use of and cannibalization/catalyst/metabolization of glucose. And the switch is proving that to me. I am still very pro-vegan for those that don't have any issues with glucose matters, and I hope to be regulated enough for a long enough period of time to revert to veganism or at least very darn near it. As an a-side, I am a weightlifter and I lost a significant amount of muscle mass on the vegan diet. I'm sure I will begin to see gains again with the animal proteins but it still bums me out :(

Hey all!!! Less than two weeks back on animal proteins and my numbers are just about normal again! Thank God!!! I was totally sketching out and thinking I would be on more meds or insulin. Hope you all had a magnificent Thanksgiving! Time to head back to gym and eat as you should, not necessarily as you want :) Remember, just a little over a month left before all of the new years resolutioners invade our gyms.... Take advantage now :)
