Weekday walk number 17: ("the Rocket") 2.2 miles in 54 minutes, at 2.4 mph - a lot of folks out, enjoying the mild weather (mid 70s, low humidity, sunshine)... but the same folks (from every generation) don't want to make eye contact, much less speak back, to my ever-so-chipper, "Good morning!"

For me...I say "Good Morning" and "Hello there!" to everyone I see ...when I am out. Like you, the response is mixed. Some don't even hear. Some are surprised. Occasionally , I get a scowl. Many times a "Hi" back. What I have learned...from doing this...is that I have to do it for myself. I have to say...I am here.. and I see you. I do care. Most times I am renewed.

@Judyrose1997 - as always, you enlighten me. @proctorleo - I'll agree that diet IS more important than exercise... but, why should I take your advice? And what about my WOE do you think is NOT working?

I wish I could do that much walking. I have a knee that was destroyed by my time in the military so I can't walk more than a hundred feet or so before it starts to hurt. Using a cane helps, but I really need to get it fixed. When I get my weight down I plan to approach my doctor about it.

While diet is the most important factor in weight loss, activity is super important for future health and quality of life, doesn't hurt our diet that our activities burn calories too :-) IMHO 371T184, walking is an awesome activity for many reasons!!

@Steven Lloyd - exactly... burning calories starts with "lifestyle changes" long before the wisdom of engaging in "planned activities/exercise"... the whole "walk before you learn how to run" mentality. Some, like myself, may never be more active (aerobically) than moving my walking from "lifestyle" (to/from car, multiple blocks away)... to a "planned activity" (on weekends, walking to/from neighbors 2-3 miles away). There is definitely wisdom in pairing burning calories (at any stage) with our WOEs - thanks for contributing!

People are surprised and some suspicious when I say hi and smile at them. Like, why are you so nice? what do you want? BuT then there are those "old school" that remember friendliness. Don't stop being friendly. It's much needed today. : )

@Mamacastro - I agree. I guess we live in such a jaded society where everyone has their guard up, because they figure that every interaction is an opportunity to be taken advantage of?

where I walk is around a park twice (1 mile), there are the regulars (like me) all are like clockwork. I know two of the walkers names. All say good morning or at least hi. We are friendly around my parts! keep on smiling and saying "Good Morning" you never know who's day you may brighten.
