ginny71's Journal, 06 August 2017

This is going to be a vent post, probably long, sorry.I am continuing to follow the keto diet which I started the 1st of July. My fasting blood sugar had gone from 358 to 154. Now it's gone back up to 211. I wasn't able to tolerate my diabetes meds so I am trying to lower sugar with diet and exercise alone. I have lost 7-12 inches off my body without much exercise. I feel very full after eating. My blood pressure has gone down from a high of 159/95 to around 121/72 now. I had lost 11 pounds but now I am back up 4 pounds this week.

I did at least three 30 minute plus walks this week. I am having a little trouble with constipation (hemorrhoids, sorry)and that makes it tough to walk sometimes. So I took 2 days off to rest.

I joined a competition to take pictures of our scales once a week. Whoever loses the highest percentage of weight in August wins $100.I lost nothing this week.

I feel like I don't do much in the way of giving myself pleasure with food because everything seems to trigger sugar spikes. I did not take my blood sugar for the last week because I am running low on test strips. I was reading on one of my keto boards about a woman who claimed she was in ketosis but not losing weight. Someone else said that's impossible, if you're not losing weight, you're not in ketosis.

I measured my own urine once and it showed ketones. I decided that it probably meant nothing because as a diabetic, I think we always have measurable ketones.

So, I saw again this morning that my weight hadn't budged. I decided to test my sugar hoping for some good news, nope it's up 60 points. The new things I added recently are sugar free coffee creamer, salsa and smoked almonds. The creamer has 1 carb, the nuts 2 carbs, the salsa has 1 carb.

I decided I had to invest in 100 more blood test strips, which I hate! I really thought I was going to work on my diet for a month or two and cure this diabetes, but I guess it's not going to be that easy, which has me very upset today.

I have decided I'm going to eliminate the sugar free peppermint pattie and the sugar free creamer. The candy upsets my stomach anyway. I am going to have to start testing my sugar two hours after eating, in an effort to see what is spiking my sugar and what isn't.

I am actually scared about this. I feel like maybe the only things that don't trigger my sugar are bacon, eggs, mayo, tuna, chicken, cheese and maybe mushrooms, peppers, lettuce and green tea. Honestly, I am not 100 percent sure if onions and tomatoes are raising my sugar. I am worried that I'm going to see that the veggies are spiking my sugar too. Then what the heck am I supposed to do? I'm already constipated as it is. I just feel like I've been a "good girl" with my diet and my diabetes just keeps kicking me in the teeth anyway, sigh. The strips will be here Tuesday, so I should know more then.

When I was talking to my sons dad about the diabetes, he reminded me how my doctor said stress will aggravate diabetes too. I am doing self paced college courses right now. I have three more classes before I graduate with my Bachelor's. I was thinking of doing my self-paced Master's immediately after. My sons go to a public online high school. I supervise them . My two youngest will be in 10th and 12th grade this year. I was trying to have my Bachelor's done before they started school at the end of next week. I really hope stress is not contributing to this. I am a single mom and this makes life more stressful I assume then if I had a companion. Anyway, I can't do much about the stress level right now, so I hope that's not contributing.

Thanks for reading everybody.

Hey Ginny! Don't let a little wall stop you! You are doing better for your body every day. Just remember there will be setbacks, but it's pushing past them that counts. Don't let this stop you, and kick that diseases bum!

I can't give up because I am worried about organ and nerve damage that this diabetes has and could continue to cause. It's just frustrating because it seems like almost everything makes my sugar go up. However, adding exercise did not help the sugar go down. I'm just pouting, lol!

Hi Ginny71, Keep in mind... you may not be losing weight but you could be losing inches as your body adjusts. If I drink a diet soda, my blood sugars go through the roof. I've experienced that and it's frustrating but for me artificial sweeteners are a no no.

Try adding spinach, onions, mushrooms, green & red bell peppers to Egg Whites.... throw out the yolk. This preparation incorporates lots of good for you body/diabetic condition. Try adding more green vegetables and low glycemic index foods to your diet. A low carb diet/keto may leave you feeling hungry. Also self check your Blood Sugar to see where your spikes may be coming from. That will help you identify what foods to eat less of.

for me eating beef causes no weight loss for a few days and then several pounds at once. I just keep reminding myself I didn't gain it all in a month, it's going to take time. just keep with it!

Some people have a reaction whereby the brain is "tricked" by sweets that have no sugar. When this happens, your blood sugar rises and the brain signals to release more insulin. See if you can find an Atkins Induction list for the veggies it contains. Then NOTHING that is sweet even if it is sugar free. Really look at other things, such as Ketchup, BBQ sauce and other condiments. Read labels. Stick with the list, veggies, meats, etc. Then introduce new foods one at a time. This can be an opportunity to learn about how your body and diabetes reacts to food.

If you were on diabetic meds and went off of them, that's probably why your blood sugar went back up somewhat. Sweets (even sugar free) can spike your blood sugar. Excess protein can convert to glucose in the body as well. I have read that nightshades (tomatoes) can affect some people blood sugar as they are naturally higher in carbs. Being Italian, I LOVE my tomatoes and have found that I can include them without a spike but I must be mindful of how much tomato at a time. Check out Pinterest Keto recipes. Google as well. Dietdoctor .com ...what works for one person may not work for another. Experiment and keep your sugar checked to see what will be best for you. I eat a lot of salads, burgers, chicken, cabbage (homemade cole sale, pan fried with bacon or sausage). Soups (which are very filling!). Mushrooms sautéed with butter and garlic, add cream cheese. Great sides. Califlower, broccoli. You can do amazing things with. Keto cheese sauce. I've never been much of a veggie eater, but find myself now eating chicken salad over spinach lol. Check every label closely! Sucralose, dextrose, matodextrin...so many names for "sugar". Be diligent. You can get this under control! Log everything, good and bad so you can see patterns and what may have spiked you. Keep your carbs low and fats high in the beginning. Keeps you satiated and helps your body switch to burning fat for fuel instead of glucose. Best of luck to you dear. ❤️

I really, really appreciate everyone's advice. I am going to try out all these suggestions. I was only on my medicine from like June 21st through the 30th. It's been over a month since I took it so I don't think the medicine is what spiked my sugar.

I use an app called Glucosezone and he really explains what foods spike your sugars. They also have amazing exercise videos.

Each person reacts differently to different foods. Tomatoes in general tend to raise blood sugar. Lentils and other legumes as well. Try to keep meals small and in small intervals and always combine the bigger part of your meal with choices high in protein. Soups and liquids tend to be absorbed easily so not always a good choice. For a week try your foods that do not spike your blood sugar levels and then introduce different foods individually and in smaller quantities to see the impact. If you can , incorporate 30 minutes of walking every morning. Do it for 21 days, it will become the best habit you can have.

I tend to agree with ClarityAnn. Coming off your meds will show a higher BS but you will need to experiment with foods to see what is causing the spiking. Adding more fat to your diet will work towards to helping you in that area as well as drinking more water. I take Digestive Enzymes and drink Komboucha Tea. That keeps me regular. Try to stay away from chemically sweetened products. That processed stuff will cause a weight gain. Your body will still react to it as if it is sugar. There are lots of articles out there about this. I think you are doing great. You just have to keep education yourself and keep walking. Good luck.

I would suspect the "sugar free" items...there's some talk that the mere taste of sweet triggers insulin, whether it's actually sugar or not. I personally have found "fake sweet" derails me almost as badly as sugars...
