Keeping an eye on the hurricane...while I appreciate the coverage the Weather Channel is providing, I have to say there's a little 'fear porn' going on.
As it stands now, there's no evacuation order for my county (Jasper, SC), and the forecast for tomorrow, when it should move through here, is for winds of 20-25 mph, but rain of 12-15 inches. It's been dry here, though, so the sandy soil should suck that up pretty quickly.
I went out yesterday to get some last minute supplies, and my little town was hopping! There was no bread on the shelves in either of the grocery stores, but they had plenty of bottled water. All the gas stations were busy, but there were no waiting lines. I topped off my gas tank, and filled a 5 gallon gas can, as well, in case I decide to make a run for higher ground.
I have 3 five gallon jugs of drinking water, and will fill my huge, round Jacuzzi tub to the brim, for washing and flushing, etc.
Thanks to my 'prepper' phase, I have a pantry full of non-perishable food. My biggest concern is an extended power outage, and losing a freezer full of food. I do have at least 4 alternative cooking methods, as well as candles, lanterns and oil lamps.
As long as the wind speed isn't too high, I'm hunkering down to ride it out. If it looks like it's going to be dangerous, I can go to my backgammon friend's house. It's a concrete block house, so should be able to withstand anything the storm can throw at it. LOL.
Prayers of protection are going out to everyone in the path of this storm.

Did you ever wonder if all that fear porn is from the bread and milk companies who just to empty their shelves when they want a boost in profits? Just kidding :P You sound like you're totally set... I hope all goes well down there... I think it'll die down by the time it hits up here.. time will tell...

LOL, Pickles! It wouldn't surprise me! Actually, a reporter did address it the other day. They said they'd rather over-play the danger to get people to get out of harm's way, rather than give them the illusion of safety.

I get the filling the bath tube with water, makes since. But why is it that when a storm comes people grab all the bread, do we really eat that much bread, it doesn't have a shelf life of just three days as it did when I was a child. Then there's the milk, OK, the power is going go out, killing the refrigerator, how long is that milk going to last unrefrigerated? Just sayin...

Hope you are Ok! It must nerve racking watching all these weather patterns. I'm glad we have earthquake insurance, which is expensive with a high deductible.

Bunkered down here, too (countyline M-DadeXBroward). Raining off & on, like the weather channel announces. Prepared as much as possible; so thankful for my son and grandsons who stopped by to secure the outdoors and especially the glass doors with the hurricane shutters. Even though we are not exactly in the Matthew's aim, the anxiety of the unknown which could be a degree to the west and/or for the safety of so many people and property in danger - it all seem to change the mood of one's guts. Eating/health: I have not been eating all my 'good' foods', and last night I HAD (!) to have some white chocolate covered pretzels. My goal today is to be safe in the eating department as well - not waiting until I am HUNGRY, and drink enough water. Wishing you all a safe ride of this weather condition!

you are a very wise lady, being prepared should keep some fear away, shot an arrow prayer for you and yours....let us all know the outcome....freezer should be ok if you keep it closed for up to 2-3 days.

Stay safe, Kes. The winds don't sound too bad, but that's a lot of rain!

You are prepared! I agree with you that the Weather Channel gets a bit hyper about storms....the five to six day hypes on hurricanes set off nerves in everyone. I suppose they want to be sure people are aware that they need to do what is necessary. My six years of living in Galveston provided me with lots of opportunities to learn about preparedness and as you so swell put it, Fear Porn...Prayers are sent up for all.

Now that's a tough one. Any successful diet begins with keeping the kitchen only stocked with "correct" foods; what to do when you have to prepare for flooding & a power outage? (I used to live on the East Coast, too, and there was always at least two storms a year that would kill the power for a weekend.) There's a big difference between eating Nuts or Tuna Fish from a can, vs. candy/cookies/crackers.

Thanks everyone! I shouldn't have trouble finding something to eat. My daily pantry has been purged of 'bad' foods for months, now, and my prepper's pantry has plenty of good stuff, too. Stress eating isn't a problem for me. Heck, I might just fast until the power comes on. I'll check in when and as I can. Hang tough NRR!
