Why the Fat?
My colleague who introduced me to the ketogenic approach loads up on stuff like bacon, fatty cuts of meat and sausages. Uggh! Even when I ate meat I abhorred fatty pieces. I have been looking at many diet plans/ways of eating over the past month or so, and I am intrigued by the keto/LCHF approach, because I saw how my co-worker lost massive amount of weight in relatively short time (She is paraplegic, and does almost no exercise but lost over 100 pounds in a year or so).
My issue is that I have never been into using loads of fats. My low-carb morning smoothie is quite satisfying without any fat, but I toss in a tbsp of coconut oil just to keep the macros up. Likewise for the olive oil in my midday salad- I prefer my salads without any dressing. I would very much prefer to go without 'drinking' the oils and instead get my calories from cashews, almonds, etc, but that throws off my 20/20/60 ratio of carb/protein/fat. Why, exactly, is so much fat necessary? Is it:
1. To assist with satiety?
2. to make up the required daily calorie intake (I know that fats are incredibly calorie-dense)
3. Is it that our bodies have to be "trained" to treat fat as fuel in order to achieve ketosis? (I query this one because when I was having my daughter I went into ketosis without eating any fat, just because I was so nauseated that nothing would stay down.)

I agree with HCB. Try it all, and decide for yourself. :)

Thank you to all who took the time to respond. You have given me a lot to 'chew' on. Thank you Ericahollister, I have a clearer understanding of the dietary principles behind the approach after reading your bit on insulin response. HCB, you were very helpful in pointing me to alternative fats that I will be more comfortable consuming. Thank you so much!

Noreen, I can see myself doing low-carb with moderate amounts of fat from nuts, avocado, etc., as you described. I just cannot come to terms as yet with basically drinking fats just to meet the macro percentages. I will be interested in hearing how it works for you. Maybe we should compare experiences over the next few weeks.

Philmck, I certainly am not trying to make anyone sad, and I do not think that my personal dietary choices will make a whit of a difference to FS members. I am just trying to gather information in order to make the best possible choices for myself. I have always had this habit of questioning everything. I know that it annoys some persons. However, if something doesn't make sense to me, I prefer to ask for clarification.

Caterpillar2Butterfly, I am willing to give at least some of the approaches a try. However a few definitely will not fit in with my lifestyle, e.g. the purchased meals and meal replacements are either unavailable or ridiculously expensive in my country.

Imitatincrabmeat, I know that I will keep opening myself up to these situations because I cannot be a passive reader/listener. I must engage in the discussions to get clarity. I will keep including you in the discussions, with your consent, because you provide a radically different but thought-provoking viewpoint. I might not eventually accept all that you write, but at least you have stimulated me to investigate alternative approaches.

I will also confess this: Whenever someone posts a success story on FS, I check out what they have been doing and eating over the past few months. There are many successes and many approaches to the weight loss challenge. Happy journeying, everyone.

Love your attitude, delede! :) Happy journey to you! :) Oh... just to clarify for you on my PERSONAL approach (which I am in no way forcing upon you or anyone else), I don't do packaged food or meal replacements either. My produce is organic when possible & most of my meats organic grass fed/free range when possible.

we always have to try, like people say, if something works for you, stick to it, if it doesnt work then is time to try something new. I´m back on that plan starting today so by Friday I´ll see how many pounds I loose, and sure we can compare results. Have a success journey!

Well, I ("PERSONALLY") have been doing KETO/LCHF for 5 months. I am 4 pounds short of losing 100 pounds. Do what works for you. Im not going to get into the scientific aspect of how or why it works. Because I don't think I could handle "The one of a billion names" typing out a biochemistry book that means jack crap to anyone. Look at my diet calendar. Look at my weight loss graph. Then look at Phils information. You can see that they match almost point for point exactly. What we do works. PERIOD!. No science. We are not suffering in ANY way. We are THRIVING and feel better than we ever have. And we have shown the greatest progress of pretty much ANYONE on the FS community in the least amount of time and with the highest degree of success. YOU decide what works. But don't be dragged into a garbage Biochesmistry sermon from mount science.

I wasn't talking to you. I mentioned no names. Leave me alone.

Heyyyy! Please, let's agree to disagree... or let's disagree without hostility. I specifically invited I.C.M to contribute to this discussion on my journal and I also welcome the comments of each and every person who contributed. Knuckles, I have been actively studying your charts, and your progress is phenomenal. Sadly, at this point in time I cannot do what you and Phil are doing. However, I have incorporated some of your methods into my personal plan, with modifications to suit my finances, health, local availability of items, my lacto-vegetarian lifestyle, etc. On the other hand, I am fascinated by the science behind the eating, so I also value Imitatincrabmeat's contributions. I do not know the history behind the interactions on FS, and honestly I do not care to know, but so far I.C.M., despite his many name changes, has been unfailingly willing to help me increase my knowledge of his unorthodox approach. I would hope that the FatSecret community is tolerant enough to allow for the amazing diversity of approaches and experiences that are shared by all members.

Delede, its not the food we eat. Its the food we don't eat. Ya want to lose weight? Don't eat. lol. Not even kidding. There is no food on earth that will help you lose weight. NOT eating, or eating a lot less? That's the ticket.

That's what Butter Bob says ☺

Oh, thanks, LadyinDenim. I was simply telling it from the heart. I like that one Knuckles! I certainly am eating less, and making better nutritional choices. Now I am finding out that if I eat too little I might actually lower my metabolism, which is already in a mess because of my medical and dietary history! Anyway, I know that I cannot hope for quick fixes, so I am grabbing that 'eating a lot less' ticket and riding the weight-loss train till I reach my goal. It might be a long hard road, but I'm gonna get there, and I aim to enjoy the journey and the interactions with my fellow travelers as I go.

I was wondering if anyone else caught that; in Delede's original post she asked, "Why, exactly, is so much fat necessary? Is it: 1. Satiety. 2. to make up the required daily calorie intake." Yeah, point/question #2, there's no such thing as a "required" daily caloric intake. There's a daily LIMIT, but not a daily requirement, you don't REQUIRE any calories every day. not until you've depleted all your fat stores, and since you're on a site intended for those trying to lose weight, I'll assume that's not one of your accomplishments. So, I finally read your profile, Delede, since you're a vegetarian and can't use meat, just do what Knuckles is suggesting; don't eat, or at the most eat very little. Shoot for 900 calories a day eating beans and nuts, throw in an avocado and you'll be a skinny Golden God in no time.

Delede, what Philmck said is Exactly what I personally would do if I were Lacto Veg. which I pretty much am. I RARELY eat meat now. Eggs are not meat. lol

Phew! Now those final three are responses I can live with. Somehow I thought that I HAD to eat fat up to 60% of a 1200 calorie day. I can almost certainly be satisfied with 900-1000 calories per day if I eliminate the oils I was trying to include. I also love the fact that you three gentlemen have been able to find some common ground.
