smartin585's Journal, 16 June 2016

I haven't been very active on here in the past few years. My father died in 2014 and I kind of shut down for awhile...I had lost weight then I gained it back , then last spring (2015) I lost it again. I started graduate school in the summer of 2015 and have spent the last year either in a classroom or at home doing school work...I put on 30 lbs in 4 months and added an extra 15 by May 2016. I weighed 260 lbs when I graduated on May 7!!! That is the most I have weighed in my life. Right after I graduated I left on a trip to Hawaii and Australia...in typical Susan fashion I lost 5 lbs in two weeks :) Traveling always makes me lose weight. By the way I have been leading a low carb , grain free lifestyle since 2013. It is a good way to live , because I can still have dairy and beef, but with all things it must be done in moderation. Well as you can tell that went out the window with school. Instead of a couple of pieces of bacon I was eating a pack at a time. I was also drinking more alcohol than I should. So on June 7 (I know a Tues...weird day to start) I decided to follow specific macros (I'm living a ketogenic lifestyle) , cut out alcohol, do intermittent fasting (16 hrs fasting, 8 feasting), and get 10,000 steps (5 miles) in at least 3 days a week. One week in and I"m already down 5 lbs...my skin feels softer...I'm sleeping better, and I have more energy. I would like to get down to 170-175 lbs...that is a lot of weight to lose and I don't have unrealistic expectations. I would like to be below 200 lbs by Christmas, but if I"m not that is okay...as long as the weight is coming off. I have lost and gained weight so many times in the past, many of those times I starved myself for months to get the weight off as quickly as possible and then a year later it would be back. I am not a person that can lead a sedentary life and maintain my weight...I have friends that don't do much in the way of exercise and never gain a pound. I have to keep up good eating habits AND be semi active. It is important to reflect on your past...really understand and see why previous weight loss programs didn't work in the long term. It isn't about being on a diet for x period of time, it's about changing your lifestyle forever. I'm ready to do that and live it for longer than 6 mths or a year. Lucky for me keto makes it easy...I have tons of food choices (even pizza), but I still have to be conscious of the amount and even the times when I eat. I have a slow thyroid so exercise is a must! Well that is enough for now. So I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all (I promise to be faithful at least through the end of the year) and hope that you will support me...in the past this site has really helped.
