I like to run in the mornings before work. I have about 45 minutes between dropping the kids at school and when I have to start work, so it kinda works out! I was hoping to get a run in yesterday morning, but got there a little late, so it didn't happen. Today was waaaay too cold (9 degrees F), so I'm hoping tomorrow will be better (should be about 25 degrees F - Not ideal, but do-able!). My goal is to run 600 miles this year, which averages out to about 12 miles per week.

Why 600 miles, you ask? Well, originally, I did the math to see how far I would have to run to drop 30 lbs, and the math told me: 600. However, I just went back and re-did the math, and 600 miles doesn't even come close. At 100 calories per mile, I'd need to run around 1,000 miles to lose 30 lbs.

So, as it turns out, 1,000 miles is not the right answer either! Last year, from August to December, I ran 128 miles and I lost close to 30 lbs. I dunno, it doesn't add up to me, either.

So, I figure I may as well at least accomplish my goal of running 600 miles, whether or not I need to lose the weight. I figure it's good for my heart, keeps the fat off, and it makes me feel really good. So why not?

Not poo-pooing exercise of any form by any means -- I think it's an important component of health, fitness and overall well-being. But as it relates specifically to weight loss, I think you're research time may be better spent in reviewing 1) how many calories you ate (daily/weekly/monthly); 2) where those calories came from (i.e., your macro ratios -- fat/carbs/protein) and 3) what was your net calorie deficit (based on calories burned) and THEN look for some emerging 'patterns' in those areas as far as weight loss or gains. One thing I've learned since joining FS is that weight loss is probably 80-85% "in the kitchen" and the remainder is your physical activity -- i.e., you can't outrun a bad diet (I haven't looked at your food diary, so please don't interpret that as my describing YOUR diet as 'bad') -- it's just a general statement (IMHO). Have a great day and bundle up for that run!

I agree with losinit1655, food portions and type are the most important part of weight control. Having said that, RkTkFx, I do believe that exercise does play its part. By exercising, your are building muscle which helps keep your metabolism fired up. Beyond weight control, exercise is better than Prozac for preventing depression and is critical for cardiovascular health. Best Wishes. I hope you meet your 30 lb goal.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm absolutely convinced you are right with regard to weight loss being mostly done in the kitchen. I like the phrase "you can't outrun a bad diet". Very clever and very true. BTW, if you look at my food diary, you'll see some bad foods as well as some good ones. To call my diet "bad" wouldn't be too far off base. I'm working to bring it in to line slowly, adding protein, reducing fat, increasing fiber and reducing sodium. I'll get there! Eventually.
