zaza_gabor's Journal, 29 November 2015

Not knowing exactly when the rain would start, I did my morning run in the vicinity of my home today, as I didn't want to risk being caught far away from it and getting soaked. I still had to face the wind but it was much better than facing the dreadful combination of wind AND rain.

I saw a man setting up his Christmas lights and decorations in front of his house, with his wife supervising his efforts from the doorstep. He was standing on a ladder, putting blue lights up a tree. A number of decorations featuring Father Christmas riding on his sleigh, carrying a bag full of presents, standing waving, elves loading the sleigh, etc, were already covering the facade of the house. I had plenty of opportunities to check them in detail, as I ran past a few times. They made the house look like a giant Christmas tree and it seems to be the only one that has been decorated that way for the time being. But as we're getting nearer to the holidays, I fear plenty of others will follow suit.

I also saw a pied wagtail at the end of the cul-de-sac where I live. Normally those little birds are quite flighty and hard to get close to but that one didn't appear to be bothered by my presence, or even disturbed when I slowed down and looked at it. Their plumage is a beautiful pattern of contrasting black and white but, that little bird displayed an area of yellow underneath its body. It was still walking very fast, which made observation difficult, but it otherwise looked very much like a regular pied wagtail, waging its tail endlessly. As I tried to get closer, it took to the air suddenly and, with its wings stuck to its body, seemed to dive through the wind, as blue tits do, only beating its wings intermittently.

After some investigation online, it appears I may have seen either a grey wagtail or a yellow wagtail but I cannot be sure: the little fellow wasn't standing still and wouldn't allow itself to be approached beyond a certain point.

You are so smart. I had great intentions, but the rain has come. I just may walk in it anyway. My exercise is down since having holiday guests and routines, and ate foods I would not ordinarily eat during this time. Thanks for sharing. I am going to look up that bird - not familiar with it.

We're only humans at the end of the day and our efforts may get temporarily derailed by holidays, having to socialise with friends and family and our own laxity with diets and exercise routines. I don't know where you are based but that bird appears to be restricted to Europe, Asia and parts of North Africa.

Looks as if the eastern yellow wagtail would be expected in this area (southeastern USA). Will keep my eyes open for it.

I always feel like I'm there with you on your runs. I'm very visual so reading your journal is like going on a virtual run with a friend and sharing what we are seeing together. I miss not being able to hike while my foot heals from an injury. Your writing is a great stand-in. Thanks for sharing.
