shawnacrutchfield's Journal, 05 October 2015

I'm not going to do a weigh-in because I don't want my weight recorded. I can't take seeing it on the graph. I injured my eye on Saturday and was in tremendous pain most of the weekend. That's why I didn't record any foods, but I also wasn't terribly diligent about what I ate. I needed comfort food and I had a little. But really, I don't see how it matters. My weight seems to go up no matter what I do. Even when I'm incredibly faithful on the diet, my weight still goes up. The only thing left for me to try is exercise, which I haaaaate but I'm going to ask husband to bring my treadmill in from he garage. If adding exercise doesn't work, I don't know what to do besides give up. Something is clearly not working.

Watching my weight go up and up? Seeing my weight get closer and closer to my start weight? I don't feel encouraged. I feel like a fat loser who will never be slender again.

Look at my weight from the beginning.

Awe Shawna, I'm sorry you had such a rough weekend. Sometimes your body needs things changed up in order to get it moving, so the tread mill is a great idea. I'm currently trying to get back on that wagon, but a couple pieces of encouragement for you....be sure you're getting enough protein, be sure you're eating breakfast and make sure you've got enough protein with that breakfast, that really helps me to stay in control through my day. Good luck to you! Chin up girlfriend, I know it's a battle!!

Try anything EXCEPT giving up -- don't even consider that as an option . . . how often are you weighing? I limit myself to once/week . . . I'm afraid I can't make any suggestions on diet since you are following low-cab/high-fat/keto other than I know it's working very well for some folks on here and I believe there are even specific 'forums/groups' dedicated to that WOE -- maybe look at/post on one of those for suggestions to 'shake things up'? Fight the good fight and stay with it!

I would agree with you with no hesitation IF you wouldn't have done so awesome when you first started, before you fell off the wagon. Did you start actually measuring all that you eat? Also, replace water with a diuretic tea. There are two things that can kick-start you again at this point, imo: either high consumption of food for one day or fasting for one day. I think you should try the fasting one. As for weighing - I weigh myself several times a day, and I am just fine. Not only seeing the ups and downs throughout the day don't bother me, on the contrary, weighing at specific times during the day helped me get a better understanding of my body's new metabolism after chemo. By comparing the weight I have throughout the day with the actual food and liquid consumption, now I can be pretty accurate about what I should and shouldn't eat and when. I couldn't stress enough the fact that this is on a person to person basis - what works for me will not work for someone else and viceversa. For example, myself, I absolutely have to skip breakfast (not that I care much for it anyway) and I MUST eat something substantial (not heavy, mind you) in the last hour before going to bed. If I don't, a vicious cycle starts: I either wake up at night hungry, or I will eat breakfast. If I eat breakfast I can't stop eating all day - I get that kind of painful hunger that goes away only if I actually eat food. So I normally have coffee with heavy whipping cream for breakfast and then I eat "lunch" anywhere between 12 pm and 2 pm. I'll eat again around 5 pm and then around 9-10 pm. It works. Besides, it seems that the whole "breakfast has to be your most substantial meal of the day" proved to be a myth, by the most recent medical studies.

Yes, I've been measuring and weighing. I have to say... I won't quit with the low-carbs. I do feel so much better AND my husband has seen the light and is enjoying the low-carb life AND refuses to eat fast food anymore. If he doesn't take his lunch to work, he goes without rather than eat crap. I'm super proud of him. Plus, I think we've discovered that he has a wheat allergy, and you almost can't eat fast food without eating wheat. I like the fasting idea and the diuretic tea.

That is good. Yes, try a fasting day. See how that works.

Do them together? Or would that be too much?

I looked briefly at your calendar, and if you're recording all of your food, I'd say you're not eating enough.... Have you read "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes, by chance? He talks about that. Best of luck and keep at it!

I found that with the medical issues I have, I have a slow metabolism. I have further reduced my calorie intake to lose weight. When I consume the number of calories the charts tell me I gain weight. Maybe that's something to try.

add in exercise and you will lose, a lot.. ive lost 74 lbs in 10 months and I started by walking 20-30 m a day .. there is no way to lose with out it in my opinion. Put your treadmill in front of the tv or use a tablet or phone to watch netflix. it makes the time fly while walking .. Hope you feel better

we got the treadmill upstairs (no easy feat) and the first thing I pointed out was, "I can see the TV from here!" I will walk and watch for sure!

Shawna, no, that wouldn't be too much, just make sure you drink LOTS of water/herbal tea. DebMora, same here. bankgirl1, that is a myth. Not everybody is the same. Some of us who have a messed up metabolism NEED to eat less in order to lose weight. I've been eating around 50%-60% of my RDI for years, actually since 2013. I normally eat under 1,000 calories a day and I am fine. The trick is to make sure that you get all the vitamins and micro-elements needed. redgirl, totally with you there. When I started this journey, at 191 lbs, I could barely walk 50 yards, moving my bulk around on a torn meniscus. Now, 50 lbs lost later, I can do easily half an hour of brisk walk (can't run due to my cervical spine issues) while I'm also using 1 lb dumbbells to get my upper arm and back muscles strength. Shawna, good luck! You can do it and you WILL get there.
